How are you storing your records

While the Ikea kallax is the popular choice, I was thinking of something with doors to keep the dust out. Perhaps the Ikea Hemnes with doors ( Glass  ). But absolutely no clue if it can bear the weight.

Getting a custom floor standing cup board made up locally could be an option, but I need more ideas for inspiration...err to copy.

Space is at a premium here, hence the ideal record storage will need to double up as a study table when needed. Have inbuilt concealed lighting to browse the records in a dimly lit room. Have some kind of partition to segregate the records, and have a door too.

So what is everyone else using. Some pics will be nice to drool upon :)

I use these. Perfectly sized for vinyls. Extremely sturdy and solid weight bearing capacity if you want to stack them. Goes with furniture and can be used as hifi rack for the components.
Only drawback is there is no dustcover. I generally store vinyls in additional sleeves, so dust going inside is not an issue.

Thanks for sharing. That does look like a viable wall mount option, if I choose to go that way :)

Heavy duty drawers, maybe?
Depends on the size of your collection.

Inner sleeve opening facing upwards and not aligned with outer cover opening will definitely help.

Hello sir and @fLUX my collection is very small. Probably have 200 records at most, and Iam in no hurry to add more :)

Will probably buy very selectively, and only those that I absolutely must have. Iam a big fan of Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik, and will probably concentrate on their releases going ahead. So I guess, storage for 300 or 400 is the max I will ever need. Any idea, how many LP's can we shove into one cubicle of the Kallax :p

@Yelamanchili manohar you can consider getting a carpenter to build something that provides you exactly what you need. E.g. here's a picture of my storage - it has the more frequently used LPs behind the glass door which slopes upwards for easy access, the other good ones behind wooden doors (the 4 pictures of musicians are actually doors to the storage space behind) and the remaining in open cabinets. The space between the two LP storage columns functions as a book shelf. The bottom most part (not in the picture) is convenient for storage of tool boxes and stuff.1000199613.jpg

Thanks sir :)

Your design seems to be very well thought out, especially the lower sloped storage with the glass doors. I can replicate something similar, but a heavily shrinked version, as the available width at one corner is only about 90 cms. So the side storage cabinets have to get narrower, though I can use the entire width at the bottom for storage. Thanks for sharing :)

I would suggest drawers in that case.

Given your requirements, I would second 50/50’s suggestion of finding a good carpenter and building a bespoke solution.
Earlier, I used to buy readymade storage and modify them to suit my needs. This would invariably result in wasted space and unnecessary expense; a compromise solution, at best.
The storage unit below was designed by me, after carefully measuring the available space and calculating my requirements. It holds much more, and takes up less space, than the two massive readymade units that were there earlier.

Iam now definitely leaning towards a custom solution, instead of trying to repurpose ready made furniture into something they were not originally intended for.

I tend to agree with people who say avoid modifying an existing piece of furniture. We converted an old sideboard for the purpose. It was something we had and is sort of an heirloom. About 60-70 years old. And modifying it was an absolute nightmare! After stripping it and cutting shelves, the carpenter found that (understandably) over the years it had warped. Not significant but enough that stuff would have to be planed down at not-perfect angles and so on. The outcome is something we really like in the end but the process was painful.

Thing is though, having it custom built from scratch can also have its own irritants. It takes time. You need to have a space where a carpenter can work. You need to keep an eye on it and follow up constantly.

Off the shelf, the IKEA Kallax is a perfect fit. You can either add doors to it or you can buy Dronas or another equivalent which will slide into it.

The advantage of it is that you can just add another matching unit when you run out of space in the first one. The downside is that I’ve found Ikea’s quality control sorely lacking here in India and after a few unhappy experiences I’ve decided not to buy any more from them for now. I know other people who have been happy with their decision to go with it though so ymmv.

There are also a music few stores in India now which sell record-specific storage. A little googling will throw them up (I can’t recall the names offhand). Some of them are nice looking but none of them are cheap per se.

So yeah, it all depends. There are no perfect solutions, just the one that’s right for you 🙂

Good luck

My collection is spread over two places at the moment. Even I used IKEA in the past but wanted something that could minimize dust.

Location 1 (Bangalore):
Shelves are empty in this picture, but they're completely full at the moment :D Shelf height is perfect for LPs (except the last shelf which is quite tall. I use that mostly for box sets). This can store about 500 LPs per cabinet.

Location 2 (Japan):
This design is available with few small scale furniture stores locally in Japan that specifically cater to people that own records. It's a super fun and effective design imo!
