+1 to srini.

I always believe that anything which can be seen by eyes are always recordable. Whatever technology they may implement, the pirates will break it and will record. As Srini said if you project the film through a Full HD project and record it with HD camera, then what will happen????

Ya thats right,

The people who been to theaters to record the film in their camera for making pirate Copy never hesitate to take video from their own projector.

But the question is "Does anyone like to pay for a Film(Pirated CD\DVD) with low quality, which the already seen with good quality?"

Am not such person, Just would wait for the company to launch the Licence print after 3-5 months of release,in case like to see the film again and also maintain a copy.

As mentioned earlier, pirated Copies cannot be blocked at one shot, but DTH could be the first step for approaching the same.

Who knows "IF this was success then the DTH would reduce the Broadcasting rate for films to attract new customer and bag more into their service domain".Never be surprised to see an add below in future
"Take away home **** DTH today and enjoy all the leading stars films at home on First day first Show with High quality and at low rates-*Conditions apply"

Or

"Why theaters? if we can offer you a Home theater.Buy **** DTH today and get worlds most selling 10000PMPO **** Brand 5.1 home theater to enjoy all the best stars Films with High quality at home on First day Show"

People would get attracted towards these commercials if Thamanna\Suruthi hasan\Hansika or some leading actress or actor features in respective commercials"

Last year 144 Films were been released in Tamil, only few super hits and some average hits" and say almost 100 films were not moving good at theaters.

If the all the films have chance to get telecast ed in DTH "BUDGET FILMS would get new blood to gain the reputation and also the producer can sell the film to DTH for reasonable value"

Apart from all, Hundreds an Hundreds of Film in Tamil industry which has completed the full film and waiting for release and the only issue is "NO THEATERS AVAILABLE FOR SMALL BUDGET MOVIES", all the major star occupy the theaters using their fame and Money.

I love watching good films and never care whether its in Theater or in my home theater:)

Whenever a new technology is adopted it meets with resistance from one section. It happened when cable TV was introduced and there was vehement dissapproval for that from the filim industry stating that it would be the death of filim industry but now all filims are sold for satellite rights to be telecated in cable TV. Even if any filim is not released on DTH and released in theatre on the first day then also it would be pirated and the copies would reach all within 48hrs of the filim release and also could be downloaded through several sites. Kamalhassan as a producer would definitely not lose out when he releases the filim in DTH but the theatre owners would definitely lose out if they do not agree to release the filim. It would be only a matter of time before all producers and directors flock to the DTH for the release of their filims.

In Chennai except Sathyam Cinemas no other theatre gives watching a movie a pleasant feeling. Even the parking fee in Sathyam is very moderate. The problem is all the theatres think that they could follow Sathyam Cinemas by hiking the price of the tickets and food inside the theatre but they do not concentrate on basic ameneties that they lack. Even in Hyderabad or Bangalore the ticket price is similar but the quality of projection and sound in some of the theatres there is absolutely terrific. Anyone would agree if they watched movies in Chennai and in Bangalore. It is only the theatre owners in Tamilnadu to be blamed for the situation that has come now. People would still like to watch movies in theatres only if the tickets are moderately priced and good amenities are provided. Even if a filim runs for 10 days now it is being advertised as a superhit filim. The point is I alone would go and watch a filim in theatre but if I need to bring my family to theatre and unless that filim is really good I would not do that thinking if it is worth the cost for 3 or 4 people to go and watch that movie.

+1 to all above points. I support DTH telecast in HD. :)

I have slowly reduced going to theaters on first day-first show from year 2005 when i purchased my PJ. Now I reduced myself going to theaters and only selected pictures I watch in theaters which have good reviews after release.

Still cannot forgot the first day first show watching thrill while in childhood.;) whether the movie is good or bad.

Will Kamal foregoes one day's collection and sell it less for theatres? He is trying to experiment at the expense of theatre owners and squeeze money, that too in the tamil industry where even the original dvds are not being released long after it has stopped screeing in theatres (and gets pirated from S'pore). In this connection, hindi, telugu are better off where they screen the movies for pay per view after a decent run at the theatres. This is the model in hollywood too and a sensible one.
Kamal is trying to be oversmart and to going to burn his fingers. If i were a theatre owner i would not buy his film.

Theatre owners have nothing to loose, the user base of DTH is only about 3-4% in Tamil Nadu. Unlike other producer who usually demand a MI (minimum guarantee) amount in advance, Kamal is only asking for a percentage of the ticket sales from the theatre owners. So even if the film flops the theatre owners will not loose anything and Kamal will be the only one sitting with a loss if he does not sell the DTH rights.

Pay per view after a theatrical release will not make much money for a Tamil film. Its been said that Kamal sold the DTH rights for around 40 crores to one of the DTH operators. But if he is to sell the DTH rights after the theatrical release he will only get around 5-10 crores but DTH players are willing to pay more for Hindi films as Hindi films have a pan India audience. Its works for Hollywood as the number of cable tv homes with STBs which support Pay per view services and DTH users are much higher than India and piracy is not as big as it is in Tamil Nadu.

When VCD and DVD's became popular Kamal said that the VCDs and DVDs of films should be released within a few months after the theatrical release but the producers along with the theatre owners made rules which banned the release of films on DVD and VCD before 1-3 years of the theatrical release. This gave to the rise of a huge market for pirated DVDs and VCDs in Tamil Nadu, now producers allow the home video release to happen a few months after the theatrical release but it has come to a point where original DVD copyright holders are not willing to pay much for DVD rights due to piracy. Most Tamil originals DVDs are prices below Rs 100 but the sales are not good enough to make a decent profit for most films.

It is possible to make a DVD quality or HD quality print from a DTH release and I am sure that Kamal and the DTH providers know this. But the whole point of a DTH release is to make money before the damage is done by the pirates. Today Kamal would have made over 50 crores, while the DTH players will generate their revenue by the time film starts to play on their platform.

Cinema halls will always exit along with other forms of entertainment as long as they upgrade themselves and offer a good movie going experience and it will come down to the survival of the fittest. DTH releases will help smaller budget films who find it difficult to get a wide theatrical release and it would also allow film makers to make bigger budget films. In the end it all about giving the consumer a choice and making money but the consumer is always the winner here :)

1000rs for telgu and 500rs for hindi @videocon dth. This is not the first time something like this is happening in india. It will only affect business positively as hardcore movie going audiance does not wait untill pirated copies come out+dth penetration is not that high to negatively affect cinema halls & 1000 is large amount to pay so i belive its a good positive step for all(audiance & producers)

This is a good analysis Nishant. I think in the end what matters is the consumer experience and if the industry can flexibly bend towards the consumer needs, they can sure win the game. After all Piracy exists mostly to bridge the gap of demand. You see, I am forced to download some movies because they don't release it at all in Bangalore or wait for appearing in TV Channels! Make it a HD broadcast with Dolby 5.1 then 1000 rupees is a steal and I can comfortably watch it at home with all. Go ahead and plug in ads for every 30 mins, it is still a good option to watch a movie, than watching a scratchy pirate copy!

Airtel will telecast the movie on Channel 155 & 157 in Tamil & Hindi respectively.
Both these channels are meant for Pay Per View SD movies on Airtel.
But the problem is, movies are telecast in 4:3 format on these channels just like all other SD channels.

Even if movie is not telecast in HD format, they should at least telecast it in 16:9 anamorphic format.

It depends on the revenue sharing model with the theatres for this movie. If the producers share the profit/loss at the box office instead of outright selling, then the theatre owners having nothing to fear as it will be a win-win or otherwise for both the parties.
Anyway, i prefer to watch the movies in theatres based on the good reviews, and am not a 1st day 1st show person nor do i like to watch it on TV, if it deserves to be watced in theatres. If the experiment succeeds and leads to better movies, fine.

I completely support Kamal Hassan's move here. He has invested most of his entire life savings for this film and so it is his prerogative on how to do business and no one has any right to threaten him. How can the Theatre owners justify banning his film ? It is very much like Talibanization. And also to say that he is trying to oversmart and run business at the cost of theatre owerns is not correct. WHen a person has fully invested his entire savings, he will not play such games. I do see lots of benefits for a film producer going that way and it is an exxageration to say that the Theatre owners will suffer a lot.

Guys,
Any of you have update whether viswaroopam relay is going to be in HD format or not? I got in touch with Airtel and Videocon CC executives but they have no idea about that

Regards,
Madhur

Another most awaited film on the following Vishvaroopam,

Director Manirathnam has hold the selling of "KADAL" film to the distributors. He is awaiting for the response to the Vishvaroobam's in DTH from the public. If the film make a mark ,then no doubt even the KADAL would be ready to be telecasted in DTH.

This is the first try and the results would have a minimal impact in Tamil film industry.

Lets see , on how it goes

Here is another link of Maa TV where Kamal speaks with the Director Rajamouli (Eega and Magadheera fame). Kamal talks about the technology used in the filim, the sound and light used and more details. I was surprised to note that the Afghanistan part in the filim was actually a filim set. Such perfection that if he had not mentioned no one would have known that it is a filim set. The conversation is in Telugu but Kamal mostly speaks in English and can be followed easily.
