Hello videophiles !

I'm on the lookout for a 42/46 inch LED. Did a quick round of window shopping and comparing all brands side-by-side, I picked out Sony and Samsung to be the brands that I need to filter on. The marketing guy was going on and on and on about some "engine" and all which hardly made any sense to me as I was sure I wasn't looking at an automobile. ;) But, I was damn sure he didn't know anything at all about what he was talking. It was all just sales jargon. Neverthless.

Something caught my attention, and I tried looking all across this forum for any threads with the name 'refresh rate' in the title. Couldn't. My apologies if there already is.

A little more googling and I find that different companies have a different brand names for this particular factor of refresh rate. Some call it MotionPlus, while some call it CMR. Now when I was comparing some models in the same price range, I found SONY EX720 with Motionplus 200, while Sam D6600 with CMR 400! A double ?? Leads me to the question whether the brands rename this technology so that they can use their own multiplication factor?

This is going to be a FAMILY TV, so rarely any 3D is needed, but SPORT is religion in the family, and while viewing a football match on STAR SPORTS HD, I could really tell the difference between a 100MHz+ and the usual 50Hz. And I cannot agree that it was psychological because I wasn't even aware of this term called a REFRESH RATE before I walked into the store.

Appreciate your help forumers.

Mate, Plasma is more suited for Sports viewing.....also consider them during your evaluation of models...

Oh yes! A little more reading and I learn that plasma TVs are well-appreciated for their 600MHz refresh rates and above. Just a matter of personal preference, I'm looking at LED-backlits specifically. Back the same old question, so, Sony motionplus 200 seems to be comparatively low with respect Samsung AMP 400 and 600s. So, is there a standard spec that I can use for comparison? Or, does it not matter much after a certain threshold, say 200?

even if the tv had the refresh rate of 400 hertz.. the signal feeded will be at 60 hz standard.. or maybe 24hz if its a bluray..

however what the tv does is use its own algorithm and get it to 100hz so the motion becomes smoother. dont go by gimmicks..

do another audition round and try to watch sports on the selected models and pick one which u prefer.. 120 hz are much of hype than use and a marketing gimmick..

yes plasma's are better for sports..

memphes - its Hz only and NOT MHz! You need to edit your posts and title accordingly.

Talking of 100/200/400Hz, they are primarily motion processing speeds rather than the actual refresh rate. Even 600Hz of plasma is a similar driving panel speed instead of actual refresh rate which is a max of 100/120Hz only on a plasma. In Plasma, cells are refreshed in parts about 10 times to refresh the entire screen (like in interlaced TVs, alternating lines are refreshed hence one frame takes 2 cycles to refresh).

Similarly most of the LCD TVs have sort of "forced" refresh rates on parts of the screen when processed content is fed to the panel at 100/200Hz (LG/Phillips 200/400Hz is more of a gimmick with blinking LEDs in the backlight to simulate 400Hz refresh rate). That in anyway should not be inferred as the real refresh rate which still is 50/60Hz on these TVs.
