2nd Lenco

congratulations...you will be the TT king around here soon :)

My worry is, at this rate there will be no time to enjoy the music but keep making plinths etc. Need to stop this frenzy till the next beauty comes along :-)

Congrats Anil, I would suggest give the stock tonearm a try before replacing it, it pairs really well with low compliance DL-103. Though I dont see the counter and vtf rider weights in the picture.

Thanks. I have not assembled the tonearm yet. It came separate during transit.

Since of late I've been doing a lot of reading on lencoheaven, was wondering about PTP. I don't recall any of our FMs taking or proposing that route. Any comments or suggestions?

Also regarding the stock L75 tonearm, as per Lenco literature, its not all that bad after all, yes could probably do better with low compliance carts. I am sure that this tonearm is definitely better than the stock Garrard tonearms, how does it match up to the Technics S-arm (assuming we are making comparisons in the same league and not higher)?

Wait and watch this space...in a month on PTP ;)

regarding the Arm..it is controversial.. person who Re-discovered the lenco and gave it the cult status feels even an entry level Linn/decca is far better than the stock arm..so not sure of how good it is. The rega 300 is apparently a Major upgrade. I would suspect the technics to be a far superior Arm - On the techics TT :)

Hi,
PTP looks good, but only problem idler wheel is always engaged even in off position.
Stock tonearm of L-75 is not worth putting money and efforts. It can't compete with modern tonearms. My Pioneer tonearm is better than L-75 arm.

Regards,
Sachin

I second both above opinions.

PTP solves one serious shortcoming of the Lenco L75 - it replaces the rather thin top plate, which is of pressed steel, with a nice and thick stainless steel two-part top plate that helps to isolate the motor from the tonearm. But it does away with the on-off mechanism and the idler stays in contact with the motor shaft even when the 'table is not playing. Further, other speeds cannot be played unless some extra mods are carried out. I stay away from 78s but I do have some nice 45s. So I NEED the ability to play 33 and 45.

Well, those are my understanding of PTP's disadvantages. Please feel free to correct me.

Stock arm of the L75 will be the limiting factor in any L75 rebuild. Please replace it with something more modern and better built.

All PTPs do have an option of switching between 2 speeds..and you can choose it to be 33 and 45.
PTP4 the option is external
PTP5 it is under the platter

it is possible to put a mechanism to decouple..someone had done it on LH using the default mechanism although not on a PTP..

not sure of it works on the PTP

The L75 is now fully serviced and ready. Thanks to Santhosh for lending his old L75 plinth, I am able to provide a base for it. The motor, main bearing, idler and tonearm are all completely removed and cleaned up. Works quite well. The V-block are OK but are not in prime shape.

I have come to the conclusion that the tonearm is no good and needs to be replaced soon. The L75 tonearm has no concept of rigidity and has too many loose parts all over and also very flimsily built. My idea is to replace it with a Jelco 250 which is a direct fit. The Jelco costs twice the amount of what I paid for L75.

Here is a picture of a working L75 with standard tonearm and a Ortofon OM30 cartridge.

Those who are jumping onto the L75 bandwagon need to know that there is considerable time and expense that they must be willing to put in to bring the L75 to top level performance.

Cheers.

Congrats Anil..Great going !

Completely agree on the Time part..expense can still be worked out but time is really the killer. those looking for a Plug and Play from day 1 need to really stay away.
regarding expense..if you do look at 2x-3x the initial cost you will have something amazing subject to time spent ;)

I think that the expense part still brings VFM, when one makes comparisons with the pricing of the big Garrards, the LP12 and the newer breed.

true reubensm, but those who are looking at a 30-50K player may be better off getting a newer TT or a used technics 1200
