For a change, wife is in agreement and wants a 3D. I guess out budget will only allow us to go up to 55", so I need a model number and names of brands which I should be looking at in my research. Kindly suggest which ones have the best value for money?

Get the latest 65 inch panasonic 3d plasma 65ST50 unfortunately they are not selling the 55 nad 50 inch ones in India. For 3D the larger the display the better it is.

If you want slightly cheaper ones within 130000 go for the 50 inch 50GT50 panasonic. It is a step up the ST series just behind the TOTL VT series.

LED offerings from Sony, Samsung series 8 and LG (passive 3D) are also good but the newer plasma have accurate colors as well as blacks.

Plasma for sure........also better for 3D, depending on budget panasonic ST, GT or VT, all are excellent plasma's!!!

When it comes to 3D, I would go for passive 3D TVs rather than active. As far as I know, only LG and Toshiba have passive TVs and between these 2, LG seems to be the better one. The ones available in 55 inches are the LM7600 and LM8600, LM6700 and LM6200.

I would also recommend passive 3D (polarized 3d) for the following reasons:

a) Glasses are extremely lightweight.
b) No charging
c) No sync issues
d) Very cheap

If you are a person like me who wears glasses, passive is a best option because wearing heavier Active 3D glasses is painful.

All the hype about "half frame display" is not relevant and overstated. But this is not true as the human eye cannot perceive the difference. You should check the whether you feel the difference by visiting a multi-brand showroom.

However, passive 3D is available with LED TVs only and that too a few models only. LG is promoting passive 3D in a big way and have been fairly successful. With their success rate, others are joining the club.

In general, I do not like 3D. But that is me.
