I am nearing completion of my journey for the time being on my audio set-up.
Now I have time and some money left to plan for TV upgradation from 26" (Samsung) to 40-46". My viewing distance would be approx. 10-11 ft. I have to stick to LCD, as my drawing room has big glass door/ window and very well illuminated. Plasma will not be adequate in contrast.

The TV has to be wall mounted. Main viewing would be Tata Sky (simple, no HD subscription) and in future Blue ray movie/ documentary. Whether to go for 'Full HD' or 'HD Ready'? My preference is for Full HD with 100 Hz to get better picture with Blue ray in future.

Regarding companies the choices may be Sony, Samsung, Panasonic or Hitachi. Regarding Sony - they are pricey and came accross few posting in HFV regarding requirement of panel replacement and not so good after sales service.

Can you suggest any good model of Samsung? I have heard that Samsung does not give any asurance about their Panel type and depends on someone's luck what type of panel he is purchasing. Is it possible to check and ascertain the type of panel before purchasing?

Regarding Panny and Hitachi LCDs, what's your opinion regarding their picture quality, after sales service etc?

Please suggest.

For the size you are looking for ,you must go for Full HD,I think Samung series 6 and above have 100Hz (LA46C650L1R)and have very good upscaling too along with movieshare. I have samsung 32inch over a year and a half and I'm very satisfied for both SD and HD .

Well i suggest you to get a Matte screen lcd like the samsung C530 or C630 or the Sony Ex400 or EX500.
Both are good choices.
Yes the panel lottery is still there in samsung.
Panel replacement or tv going wrong can occur in any tv from the japanese to korean brands.its best to make sure it doesn't happen in the first place.
check the voltage in area, get a good quality stabilizer, make sure you keep the lcd/plasma well ventilated.clean them via vaccum cleaner once in 6 months. or more if the environment is dusty.

Hitachi,toshiba have even lesser support.

I am using a Samsung 26" LCD without voltage stabiliser since last 4.5 years without any problem. Voltage in our locality is fairly stable. My TV gets good ventilation. Do you mean outside Cleaning (top and border) with vacuum cleaner?

The models you suggested are from Samsung and Sony. Any recommended model from Panasonic?

cleaning inside the vents ,the panel.
Well is suggest you to get a voltage stabilizer, unless of course the place you live already has a power conditioner.
The panasonic aren't really that good in lcds, which is their secondary for them.
where as samsung and sony are mainly behind lcds.

In case you're looking at LG then :
42 or 47 LD650 for CCFL
42 or 47 LE5500 for edge LED
42 or 47 LE8500 for full LED

Thanks Heynownow.

How the normal Tatasky SD picture will be in LE8500? Between LG and Samsung, who makes better LCD/LED TVs and whose servicing is better in India?

Service in india is bad in all manufactures.
B/w samsung and LG the .The samsung has the better image processing and blacks are quite deep.Their glossy panels have far less reflections then the LG glossy lcd and sony NX range.

The Samsungs definitely. I would recommend the C630 or C650 any day. The have better processing than LG's - SD, HD and motion. Gives you a 3D like "pop" picture.

I calibrated LG LED and their whites and blacks are murky except for dynamic mode which you will never use anyways.

IMO, LGs LCD and LED struggle except for LE8500 and LD650 to an extent.

I have seen Samsung 40C650 and 40C550 today. 40C650 (200 Hz) has glossy panel and priced Rs. 77k, whereas 40C550 (50 Hz) has matt panel and is priced at Rs. 58k. Ofcourse, these prices are negotiable. My viewing distance is between 8-10 ft and 40" model seems to be a better choice than 46" model specially in case of SD Viewing.

40C650 has better clarity of fast moving objects and overall very good in both HD and SD content, but I am sceptic about it's glossy panel due to potential problem of reflection of opposite lights. Why TV manufacturers use glossy panel at all? Does it offer any advantage in PQ?

BTW, can anybody tell me the best price available for these two models?

^The samsung C650 has 100hz not 200hz(still a whole better then LG 200hz).

Glossy panels like the one used in samsung still have far lower reflections compared to super mirror finish tvs like Sony NX and some LG models.
Off course a matte lcd will have lesser reflections since it diffuses the light.

Some manufactures like Sony and Samsung achieve deep blacks by using dark panel despite being glossy have lesser reflections like the Sony HX and LX series that have the Opti contrast panel.
These panels have better blacks under ambient light then matte lcds.

How come Adder! I have seen in my own eyes Samsung 40C650 model with 200 Hz and it costs approx. Rs. 9k more than 40C630. It may be new model in Oct2010 or the Samsung showroom at Noida is befooling the customer.
Anyway, how UA-40C6200 compares with 40C650? The former is more expensive by Rs. 11k and edge LED TV.

Go to any Apple store and take a look at MacBookPro matte vs glossy screens. You'll see the answer yourself... the same holds true for TVs as well..

Yes, definitely a glossy panel will at least seem to show better contrast and saturation than a matte one.. for a computer it's a different story but for the TV definitely a glossy one will show slightly better blacks, saturation and contrast...

P.S. : Don't take my word for it, go snd check it out in the showromm youself. Ask the salesguy to put both NX and EX TV with same settings and comapre.. buy what YOU like...

Good luck.

AMITNOIDA I closely examined the Sony and Samsung model with 100 hz with clear motion rate 400 and I really was impressed with deep black and liked the Samsung LED 40C6200 @ 76,600/- from laxmi Nagar.

Adder has been instrumental in the purchase I'll me going to make today though he has still adviced that I should go for the Samsung LCD C630.
