Hi,

With the festival season on, I was trying to hunt for some deals locally. I'm also transferring residence from Singapore to India, so wanted to see if I should buy a TV in Singapore or in India itself ( warranty concerns).

Among some I checked
Samsung 40H6400 - Rs. 63k
Samsung 40H5500 - Rs.57k

I also checked a 48" for getting some idea
Samsung 48H5500 - Rs.77k

Now I tried comparing these to singapore prices. I noticed that the SG price + 36% customs duty makes these TVs on par if not a tad more expensive in Singapore, not to mention no warranty.

Do you guys thing that it's better to find a TV locally than buy one in SG? I'm not sure if my relocation package involves import duty.

Thanks in advance.

IMO if you are moving to india, you should buy it india itself because AFAIK warrenties are restricted to the country in which the product is sold, also if at all god forbid a need arises for you to approach the consumer court, the suit for the product purchased elsewhere shall not lie in india.hope this helps

THanks a lot. I was tempted by the price differences in TVs at Singapore ( 30-40 % ) cheaper. However, with the current 36% import duty, the price boils down to the same AND without warranty :(.

If you are claiming Transfer of Residence (if you qualify), you will not pay 36% customs duty. Used TV will attract 15% duty. If you have more than one TV, the second one will attract about 30%. Buy, open, re-pack. And obviously, don't say it's a recent purchase. Usually the moving company will take care of this. Check the 15% and 30% numbers also with them. This was the case when I moved a few years back. Don't think it has changed since.

Relocation Package....If your company is paying for it, it will cover all expenses that are on paper.

Thanks vgrove. Apparently nowadays it;s 36% regardless of transfer of residence. A couple of people on the r2i forums confirmed it. Company is paying full relocation, but I'm not sure it covers import duty ( atleast there is no specific mention in the policy).

Nope....it is still 15%. The duty on importing flat screen TVs did go up last year but not on Transfer of Residence. Check out the link - Mumbai Customs Airport

Scroll down to II. Rate of duty applicable on transfer of residence :-

As for relocation, if your company is paying for door-to-door relocation, they will cover all costs that are incurred till the goods arrive at your door. Obviously you would need receipts if you are incurring and then getting reimbursed. If company is paying directly, even better.

Anything (if at all) that the mover/agent pays (bribes) to the customs to get early discharge of goods, will NOT be covered. This is usually a very very small amount in the larger scheme of things.

Thanks a lot for that link. Company is being billed directly for this. From that link, it seems like a good idea to pick up a TV in Singapore and cross fingers that I won't need warranty in India and hope for the best.

Thanks a lot again.
