Hi,

With the 55" W800a set for the TV room, I need to decide on one of the BR. I'm looking for a value-for-money TV for this as budget is a consideration after splurging on the Sony.

I'm currently leaning towards getting a plasma screen as they generally appear to be sub-50k for this size and are generally of better quality than LEDs in the same range. Is this correct?

What do you guys suggest? What are some good value buys for a 42" TV?

best VFM tv right now is samsung 490 or 4900....
also its onboard player is quite capable of file playing..as it is your bedroom so you may not need separate p[layer etc...
and mind that it is having pq at par if not better with 65k led leuage...
now its a plasma and needs care..
discussed many times..
now you decide

+1 for Samsung F4900 for 42k.

If you want an LED, consider the LG LN5120 for under 50k(if you are on tight budget).

Other LED options, Samsung F5100 for 52k, Sony EX430 or go for last year's Samsung models.

Thank you. This looks interesting! But the F4900 also appears to not be Full HD. Only 720p or am I mistaken? Same for the 490?

Care instructions: Stuff like breaking plasma TVs in by playing a variety of different resolutions/formats? Or are there particular procedures to be followed for this specific television? (This is frankly one of the reasons why I didn't opt for a plasma for my living room :o)

Thanks again!

+1 for Samsung 43F4900..............hard to find a better tv at that price. 720p vs 1080p on a 43inch tv will not make much of a difference, you can go and have a look. If you do need a 1080p panel, then you will need to stretch the budget.

720p with HD DTH does not make any difference even on 50" screen. Only pure blu-ray will. So +1 to aakashr. You can go with F4900.

Thank you. I won't be watching much DTH here besides the news. It'll be movies via the HTPC and most of what I have are 1080p rips. How would this affect quality?

Any recommendations if there's a 1080p restriction to my requirements?

Thanks.

I still suppose that you can go with the 720p TV. Take your rips on USB to showroom and test on 720p (F4900) as well as the 1080p (F5500) TVs. The 51F5000 is 51" size and will cost you 72K. You may wish to inspect whether you are OK to have a bigger TV in the bedroom and if you are willing to spend about 25K extra. If 1080p is important to you, you can consider the Panasonic 42UT50 (2012 model) which will be around 56-58K and excellent too.

How bright is your room. I'm assuming the bedroom would be dimly lit. If yes, go with the Samsung Plasma F4900

The room is actually pretty bright. But the TV will primarily be used in the evenings and later.

I'm still not sold on settling for a 720P though :| But it's a good deal!

Incidentally, is the Panasonic S60 available in India?

You should look at 720p and 1080p TV side by side and then decide. I witnessed the XT50 (1024x768) vs. ST50 (1920x1080) and came to the conclusion that for 1080i DTH, downloaded content, DVD, etc. it did not make much difference other than when text was displayed. Text showed slightly jagged edges. At a distance of over 8 feet, with 42" panel, there was no visible difference. Even with 50" the difference was not convincing. When watching BD, there is a slight difference where 1080p shines more than 720p.

The question that many will ask - "then why did you buy ST50?". The question is easily answered:

- I was impressed by the superior features of the ST50 such as G15 neoPDP panel, infinite black pro filter that reduced glare, superior blacks/contrast, etc.
- I was going to watch a lot of original BDs
- I was aiming for 50"
- I was getting a free BDP with the TV (in lieu of HTiB)
- I had the budget
