Hello people !

Thank god for that thing called Google. I had been having a miserable time for the last two weeks trying to sort out my speaker requirements but nothing cd help me out.. Finally today google pointed me here and Boy.. am I glad to be here on this forum :)

I have gone through previous threads which have asked the same question but cdnt really come up with a solution to my problem. I had Creative 5.1 for the last few years so anything that i buy now wd be an improvement on them but i wanted to have the best speakers within my rather limited budget.

I have a budget range of around 10k which i can push upto 15 if push comes to shove and we have no option within 10. There are hardly any good 5.1 speakers that are made solely for PCs... the only one that was worth looking for was Logitech X-540 but that has been discontinued..

I was wondering if I cd attach some worthy home theater gig to my pc. what do you guys think abt Sony sony dav tz210? its arnd 12k..

I need the speakers for music and movies.. any help wd be greatly appreciated !

consider these

1.speakers and receiver are two different entity
2. set your preference for everything in a box or separate units
3. The first one is a sheer compromise but budget friendly while the second option opens the door for superiority, fidelity, upgrades but will be costly w.r.t your budget
4.both the ways - a 2.0 (stereo)/2.1(with a sub) or 5.1 system is possible
4.there are many 5.1 HT packages available in the market and they are more or less same in quality as long as you stay within 10-15K, you are getting a receiver and five speakers at that price, what else you want?

the sony model you have mentioned is a reasonable one at that price, but probably they are designed for hooking up with a TV, as I said first made up your mind - you want quality units or compromised mass market units, then it will be helpful for us to write what we know

Hey i've Creative Inspire T6200 5.1 Package with me.. Just few months old.. used for couple of hours.. If you want i can sell.. I bought it at 6K then.. I updated to Yamaha few months back so it's just having rest.. :)

@ akd

Thanks for the reply mate. Separate unit option is definitely the way to go but again that wd surely be out of my budget. I dont think i wd be able to collect a decent 5.1 setup for anything below 25k and thats a bit out of range. As I said I had been using Creative Inspire 5.1 for the last few years so anything that I buy now shd ideally be an improvement on them.
If I go in for separate unit option what wd you recommend me..smthng that wd be somewhere close to my budget? And if i go in for the 'in a box' option what wd be my best bet?
YAMAHA - NS-P280 is smwhere around 12 k.. wd that be better than the Sony DAv Tz setup? The latter is designed for TV but i can hook it up with my pc... I wdnt really be needing the DVD player that comes along so thats something thats keeping me off Sony.

@ Gigy: Thanks mate. EDifer DA5000 sounds reasonable. I wd goole it and find out more abt it. Are you using this one?

@sagarvikram: Bro I have been using Creative till now and wanted to move on to smthng better :)

Thanks for the pointers guys...

The z5500 and Edifier DA5000 Pro sound like a good deal. Does anyone here have a personal experience comparing these two.. Edifier one seems like a VFM deal unless the sound is really crappy....?

Or should I be looking at a budget Home theater setup like the sony dav tz210? Would the sound be any better in this setup compared to the above two?

If I could ask you couple of basic questions reg your requirements.

> Are you planning to use your PC for your movies or is your aim to get some speakers for listening to music via PC.

> I have not much idea about the PC you use but do you have digital output from your pc (optical/coaxial?) How about the 5.1 decoder? Do you want it on the system like logitech above?

Many budget 5.1 systems also allow 3.5 mm jack inputs but then you are not looking into audiophile grade sound.

If you want speakers for music, I'd suggest you get a pair of powered speakers and a budget DAC (depending on on board DAC) for your money

Deepak thanks for the reply!

I am planning to use the set up for both movies and songs. I understand that 2.1 wd be better as far music is concerned but i love the feel of surround sound so am inclined more towards 5.1

The PC is a brand new one. The motherboard is Gigabyte G41MT-S2P with on board built in analog sound. It claims to give Hi-def 108dB signal to noise ratio BluRay audio playback.

I guess for audiophile grade sound one wd be looking at a budget of at least 25 k for a 5.1 setup... I want to go in for a 5.1 setup which wdnt be too big a sacrifice as far as sound quality goes...

What wd you recommend mate?

Folks I have been going through the previous posts here on the forum and found it the the following had a good repute :

Edifier S550 , Logitech Z-5500, Onkyo HT-S3300, Energy Take Classic 5.1

Now am wondering which out of these wd be as close to audiophile grade sound as possible... I am willing to push up my budget to 20 k if need be..

Another thing would i need to buy a soundcard for any of these set ups or wd the onboard audio the deed?

If there is any other speaker setup in the 20k range that can beat the above options then please feel free to correct me. Looking forward to your guidance and pointers..

@mav

edifire s550(all analog) is a good option with in your budget. but as you increase you budget then you can Onkyo HT-S3300(20k+), Onkyo HT-S3400(24k approx). these are good for movie and ok for music. if movies are prime concern then it will be good for you

energy take classic are really good speaker but quiet above your budget.

You wont need a sound card if u opt for a onkyo, as board sound card is only going to bit stream it, & if u opt for analog speakers ( edifire s550 ) u might think of getting a sound card. As the processing (DAC) is done by ur sound card.

I guess the Onkyo HT-S3300 is now available for 17,500.

Would it be a better bet than the Edifier S550 and the Logitech Z-5500 as far as movie/music performance goes?

guys cd you please suggest where can i audition these four :

Edifier S550 , Logitech Z-5500, Onkyo HT-S3300, Energy Take Classic 5.1

I havent yet heard the sound but I am inclining more towards Onkyo HT-S3300 as I wdnt be needing a separate sound card for it. I might be mistaken but I guess i wd be needing a sound card for the rest three?

Also cd you please tell me where can I get the best deal on these speakers?
Thanks !

I suggest you go for the onkyo 3300. This model is not a simple speaker system. It comes with an Audio Video Receiver (AVR) to which you can connect various audio video devices.
It has got 3 hdmi inputs in addition to optical inputs, coaxial inputs, component inputs, composite inputs, FM and AM radio etc. Most importantly it supports HD audio like DTS HDMA, Dolby TruHD and 3D movie which the other speaker systems you mentioned lack. You can connect your dvd, blu-ray player, hd dth box, media players etc. to this. However it does not have 5.1 analog input. So make sure whether your pc has optical or co-axial or hdmi outputs. If budget allows go for the onkyo 3400 model which is the latest.

I would suggest you go for Onkyo as later if wanna setup a dedicated HT, u can get BS or FS for fronts and you can use it for music as well. Onkyo is definitely gud for movies plus u'll get lot of connectivity options with Onkyo 3300/3400 as it has a dedicated AVR.. In Mumbai there must be an Authorized Dealer for Onkyo.. get showroom address from their site and get demo there..

All the best..!!!

i have been using logitech z-5500 for around 4 years, im very satisfied with its performance and it has awesome bass!! you should consider this..
