Hello,

This is my first of many posts in this forum.

Prior to posting, I've already gone through several threads in this as well as other forums regarding:

-what to look out for when purchasing a TV from abroad
-traveller's experience at customs, oversize baggage, etc.
-some success stories of being able to register the TV for warranty in india (Samsung TVs seem to be more successful here)

I've zeroed in on 3 particular TVs, two of which are readily available. The primary purpose for this thread is whether members can help me decide on which of the 3 I should buy. In addition, if there are members living in Bangkok, whether they would be able to provide the approximate prices for these TVs.

Sony KDL-55HX950 --> Can't find availability of this TV anywhere in India. Does anyone have an idea on release dates? Is this available in Bangkok?
Sony KDL-55HX850
Samsung UA55ES800

The two constraints I have are, I'm off to Bangkok in a few days and need to decide fairly quickly on where I should be purchasing this TV. Secondly, my budget for the TV is in Rs. 1.8 lakh range.

Thoughts?

Thanks for looking.

Best,
Mash

35k upto is free....more than that..30 percent duty is needed.
so custom no issue,,original recipt is needed where the amount is written..customs guys will convert it into inr and calculate ....
yeah hassle is a problem specially in tv as it is a very fine and fragile product...decide on that..but you can save a lot...
supppose a model is 1.5 lakh here..its around 90k there...
so 30 percent of 90 minus 35=21k...
1.1 lakh.......
and it may be 80k also..so more saving...

prosenjit, you have assumed that there will be no freight cost. 55" goes into oversize baggage category - so there may be baggage charges.

My co-brother brought in a Samsung 46" TV (5030). They were a group of 3 friends - so there was no excess baggage. He got Singapore GST refund and paid duty of Rs. 6000. The total cost came to Rs. 52,000.

Thanks guys. Anyone have a clue on the prices of these TVs in Bangkok?

Likewise, a release date for the Sony 950 series?

Another quick question:

I've managed to locate the Samsung UA55ES8000 for 65500 baht (Rs 1.17 lakh). The official duty I'd need to pay is roughly 30,000 INR (if they use my purchase price - unlikely). I suspect our fine folks at customs in Mumbai are likely going to want to be paid off here.

If I am unable to convince them to pay the official duty, what is the max I should be paying them as a bribe?
