Yes, it is good to see another JP. JP, even though made in Japan is in the same league as a Garrard 301 or 401 and other players in the list for its component quality. Real pity no one really knows more about these fantastic mysterious players. I am planning to mount a arm pod to JP player to see if I can further improve it's performance

Reuben, I can see that you are really digging up a lot of info since you got the 401.
we must appreciate the Engineers at Garrard and their dedication to their work

Service Department Bulletin From Plessey-Garrard 1975, Interesting tips & fixes memo from the Service department:

Confirmation that lower motor bearing can be lubed in place, without complete disassembly. Valuable motor-shaft realignment and motor spindown-time information. Perhaps the first official siting of the Inline Lightbulb voltage-pad trick, and (very) unusual advice regarding the greasebearing.

Worthwhile to note that by 1975 the 301 was long gone, and Plessey-acquisition Garrard would discontinue the 401 by the next year. So the 301 assistance here was being offered as last resort support. It does come across as a compilation of all the accumulated fixes known to be simple enough for the intrepid Lp Enthusiast to navigate.

This advice note came out when garrard was owned by the Plassey Corporation.
these are ad hoc solutions given by the company when they were no longer able to and not interested in supporting a discontinued product.
these notes have been discussed in detail on other forums. It should be noted that for the best performance a 301 or 401 is capable of, complete dismantle and service of the motor lower bearing is a must and the light bulb trick is a no no.
the light bulb trick was invented during the period when belt drive was supposed to be the best and the poor rumbler idlers were somehow supposed to match up to them. The light bulb trick reduces motor torque and takes the PRAT out.

Yes, the authority with which 301 and 401 deliver the music is amazing. When anyone comes to my listening room, I play the 301 last and I've noticed that they are taken aback by the slam and timing of the 301. There is an imminent life in the music. It is mesmerizing and awesome to look at with the S M E plinth
