But..
the comparatively specs full and low price....
I think it's a steal deal
... and

I don't understand the compatibility issues you said.
HDMI 1.4a - can connect almost all players, i think.
(think your old LCD have earlier version HDMI and new BDP supports only new version)

anyway thanks for your opinion

It was reviewed well in its time. Also specs are good. Price is too good to resist. Go for it. You can then spend more on a good 5.1 speaker set up.

The price is very good for a 7.1 system. It supports all the latest features like 3D passthrough, HD audio excluding 4K and network capability which are not important atleast for a couple of years. IMO, you should go for this model if you are tight on budget.

The NR1601 in particular is a very good deal
It has a USB in - can play music from iPods and USB sticks - as well as act as a DAC
It has analog to digital upconversion - so you can connect component/composite to it and can get output over HDMI

Apart from slightly lower power output and lack of internet features - it is a very good AVR
And as far as power goes, I had a demo of the Boston Acoustics A360 (floorstanders) in stereo mode, with the NR1601. I tried to see how much the amp could drive the speakers. My ears gave up much before the amp, so it isnt a complete lightweight

THANKS

Decided to buy.
What I need - a good AVR [ low end :) ] and 2 way speakers + subwoofer

But two options

1. Yamaha HTiB 299 - 35K quoted here Calicut (Kerala) dealer.
+s: good reciever, full set of speakers. no urgent need to buy extra speakers.
can later add a pair of good bookshelf and a centre.
-s: AVR - no standby passthrough, video upscaling,
says can't support floorstanders well.
speakers - oneway fullrange. not good for music.

2. Marantz 1601 + a pair of bookshelf.
not need to say more about 1601.
but yet to decide speakers...
what about yamaha p 60 (2+1 centre @ 10,799)

Are you sure about the no floor standing speakers supported thing?
People quote differently. At reliance digital phoenix, they connect Yamaha F150 to the Yamaha reciever that comes with YHT196.

The showroom man said that...
when i enquire about which one to replace the fronts of 299, they suggest warfedale diamond (quoted below 25K). asked the floorstanding, said better no, don't need to spend more as don't expect much extra result.
