Friends,

I am searching for a safe and reliable packer who will be able to pack my hifi ( including my dismantled turntable - with a separated pick up arm) very very well.

Most freight forwarders might do not do this. So do you have any experience of a packer packing a hifi and transporting it long distance safely?

Do share contact details if you do- I wish to pack my hifi in the next ten to fourteen days.

Regards

I recently shifted to Delhi from Mumbai and had Santa Fe handle my relocation which included a fair bit of Hi Fi equipment (I don't own a turntable). Needless to say that I am an extremely satisfied customer, therefore would recommend them highly. You can check them at the following URL

@issignosis,
bro, I used Schenker when I moved. They are German company and they also helped one of my cousin's move from India to the US, then back to Mumbai and then later from Mumbai to Bangalore....

They are a bit pricey but very very good. Nothing broke. Even in my case, nothing broke. Not a scratch. You can get their number from just dial(I have lost my earlier phone, so I dont have the numbers...)

Ask for Shane. He is good and understands us "audiophiles"!

I moved intra city this weekend. Packed all my hi fi myself. Unless you know turntables and know what to tighten what to leave loose and how to pack various elements, packing it safely is a gamble. And for sure no packer will know how to pack a TT especially when different TTs themselves have different minor requirements.

Do it yourself, and max have it double boxed by the packers with cushioning material all four sides.

Regards

For ur TT, the original packing will be really the best. In case u have thrown it, then buy a full sheet of 1 and half inch thick Hitlon packing foam, cut it carefully according to size, pack foam wherever required. All moving parts to be taped down with masking tape. If there is a transport screw, make sure that u screw it down for transpotation. Buy a sturdy carton from your neighbourhood bhangarwala which is quite a bit bigger than your TT.

For amp, best again is original packaging. In case you have thrown it, similar logic as above applies. More hitlon, more safer.

Speakers - in case u don't have original packaging, use generous quantities of bubble-wrapping to cushion the speakers before asking movers and packers to pack them in cardboard cartons.

To be extra sure, you can have them crated in wood.

PS: make sure that you remove your valuable TSD before packing it all up. And do take care of the antiskating weight!

PPS: where are you moving off to?

Manav,

I contacted DB Schenker ( I had contacted them last year to ship my EMT from Germany, which did not happen through them eventually). It seems they have stopped serving to retail customers such as us and only serve corporates. Am still awaiting a confirmation either way from them...

Josh,

Guess what I am going to do this weekend/next week?

Hit the market for Hiltlon packing foam, masking tape ( are you referring to the light brown about two-and-a-half inches thick tape? Won't it leave a mark on the metallic portions of the tt when I unpack it?)

Unfortunately I threw away all of the fantastic packing of the tt and the amp & speakers primarily because of the space constraints of living in Bombay. Fortunately I kept the bubble wrapping in the car boot so that is still there.
Packing the TSD is simple because it is simple to remove ( bayonet type) and I have the plastic case in which it was mounted.

The anti-skating weight and its silk (plastic?) thread will be a challenge to un-install.

I will be away in Copenhagen for a long time. So it makes sense to carry the hifi along; hopefully I'll get a slightly larger space for the Blumenhofers to breathe in the chillier air :).

I'll let you know if I require your toolkit again!

P.S. : Is Gershwin's Piano Sonata in F the best western classical music composition of the 20th century till now?

Regards

Keep spinning.

I used Crown on an intercontinental relo and they were very good. Very professional as well - compared to some of the other characters that inhabit this space.

If you are not sure of how a TT needs to be packed, I would suggest not relying on the packers & movers for that. They might do a good job of packing with tonnes of bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, styrofoam and the likes but that may not be enough for a turntable. I suggest you take it to a good HiFi dealer in the city and ask him to pack it up for you...and say a silent prayer that he obliges...
