Hey All,

I am in need of an Audio Rack / Stand for my room. The idea is to stack 2 of my Amps (Denon, Yahama) and for my Akai Direct Drive Turntable. Would also prefer available slots for future acquisitions.

I am not looking at an expensive solution. Would like advice on the following:

1. Should I get a custom made Aluminum rack made - Electrical problems may arise??

2. Custom made wooden rack? What wood do I need to be looking at?

3. Any idea on cost for ready made ones?

Members - If you do have any contacts in Bangalore who can help me with this it will be great.

Thanks in Advance,

Cheers,

I would look at 5 shelves- Roughly 25 inches deep- Made out of 1/2 inch plywood. Can be covered in veneer to suit your taste. The back can be open or closed with holes for cabling. Height can be adjustable or fixed- additional options can be discussed

Have a look @ ones sold by Absolute Phase also.

In your city too, check it out.

:)

I got a wooden rack custom made sometime back. It's heavy and looks beautiful. For isolation I am using Vibrapod like feet.

Thats great news.:yahoo:
Could we have some pictures please . . . .

Dear FM Record Player,
Welcome to HFV.
Well, I happen to know an amateur-level thing or two about rack design, though nowhere near some other (Pro) FMs like Magma.
My two Phooti Kaudies :-
- Avoid all-metal stands, esp if using TT. Tubular and metallic is a sure NO-NO, unless sand-filled.
- Wood is Good, just take care that its heavy and well-jointed. Must not lurch or be rickety.
- Go for at least five shelves incl TOP.
- Must provide max all-around ventilation.
- Place TT on top on a sand-box based isolation platform with anti-vibe feet (a diametrically sliced CRAZY ball is just one option)
- If not going in for either wood or metal, consider fiberglass/HDPE rods for uprights.
- Avoid fine-point spikes as feet, they tend to add sway due to reduced contact-surface-area.
- Get it (custom)made using locally available hardware, resources and tooling/woodwork expertise.
- Feel free to ask any more questions, I shall be happy to help.

Cheerio

Thanks a lot trittya. That is some good advise and options. I think I will go in for the option of a Custom Design with the points mentioned above.

Also, for the interim I go me self a decent plywood equipmet stand/rack from a friend. It was actually new. Its 4feet by 12 inches with 2 available slots. For now all my equipment fits in. I got the same for INR 3000/-.

Its post some pictures soon :)

One thing to keep in mind if you opt for wood or plywood is that some isolation feet like Vibrapods tend to spoil the finish and leave a ring shaped mark on the polish.

True.
*Use blu-tac reusable adhesive to mitigate that.
*Further, it ought to be on the underside, usually out of sight.
*Even further, use fine 'matte' finish rather than glossy.
*Other options for non-hemispherical 'feet' are:-

#make square/cuboid legs/feet out of(rubberised or better still, pure) cork sheet stuck together with silicone caulk.
#use bike cush-rubbers from a Bullet's rear wheel hub or synthetic rubber/neoprene/nylon etc suspension bushes from luxury automobiles.
#use a combo of the above
#use chewing gum:p:o:indifferent14: in case blu-tac not available. Treat with ice cube to harden and remove. Just make sure its sugar-free. You don't want ants all over your rack.:D
#use fiberglass/HDPE/wood/brass/painted lead(otherwise lead's toxic) OR other "sandwich construction" legs/cones.
