Hi,

I require advice regarding what kind of TV to buy for DTH viewing (I have a Videocon d2h HD connection with a HDMI cable).

I am mostly confused whether the coveted and highly regarded Panasonic Plasmas (i.e. VT, GT, UT series etc.) are good to watch DTH channels over a HDMI connection. I read in some of the other posts that, for DTH, the preferred choice is LED/LCD.

I thought of opening a separate thread for discussing this topic separately.

Also, it would be great if someone can post picture quality of SD and HD channels on DTH (via HDMI) on a their Panasonic Plasmas and LED sets.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi,

Which is the best choice for watching DTH channels (both HD and SD channels) using HDMI connection?

1. Plasma TVs (esp high end Plasma TVs like VT, ST, UT series from Panasonic)
2. LED/LCD TVs

I have read in other posts that DTH viewing suited for LED/LCDs. But thought of opening this thread to discuss this topic separately.

Thanks in advance

This has been discussed many times. And the topic causes unnecessary fights between FMs. So with due apologies, I would say the following:

- read the forum on these topics
- read the other forums and C-Net
- do a demo on both types of TVs
- finally, trust your eyes and gut feeling

There are a number of posts and threads in these forums on the points raised by you. It will be much better to read them and reach your own conclusions rather than blindly following somebody else's advise.

Normally the factors affecting a TV buy decision are:
1. Price / cost
2. Size of the TV
3. Content / video source you are going to watch
4. Viewing room condition ( size, lighting etc)

So please first state your budget, viewing distance, source of the video, how bright is the room so that forum members can help you to choose the right TV.

If you can view by turning off the tube lights and day time lighting can be controlled, go for a 50 inch plasma, else go for LCD/LED.
Although with your budget, you can buy high end TVs, if the most watched DTH channels are SD ones, an HD ready TV is sufficient. (X50 or XT50 by panasonic or E490 of samsung). XT50 and E490 are 3D models. At 10ft, 42 inch size is small.
Take plenty of time and have a lot of demo, particularly when there is very few customers in the shops. Ask them to demo normal SD channels. When there were a lot of customers, the sales may not heed your request for detailed demo.
In case of plasma, beware of reflections and that the full HD models consume more power.

Ok thanks ... so you are suggesting Plasma TVs connected via HDMI cable does give good/acceptable picture quality, even with SD channels.

I am asking this because, yesterday when I visited a Panasonic Brand Shop, I was quite disappointed with the fuzzy quality of the picture with SD channels. (They were showing me a Kung Fu movie on Star Movies SD).

I suspect it might be the AV cable. Maybe if they had connected via HDMI, clarity would have been better. But I forgot to ask about it.

But the moment they switched to Star Movies HD, I was blown away with the clarity. Quality was almost "cinematic". Yes, they were wooing me to check out the 50" incher and it was gorgeous.

So anybody having a Panny 50" Plasma (a.k.a Panasonic), can you please comment on the picture quality of regular SD channels via HDMI cable on a DTH like Tata sky or Airtel ?

Many thanks in advance ....

IR is the biggest & the most irritating issue, when it comes to watching regular TV on a plasma. I'd go for a LED if I were you.

It is one of the most debated subject in electronics. You will find innumerable articles and comparison between the two on internet, this forum included.
Further both the technologies have long back come out of nascent stage and by now are quite mature. Both have their well known pros and cons, strengths and weakness. Still there are strong (even die hard) supporters of each form of display technologies. In that scenario, nothing is better than to compare both by oneself and choose as per his/ her taste. A pole will hardly serve any purpose.

a 21 crt is no doubt good for a normal tv viweing.but if someone wants true big screen exp and a super picture plasma is the answer.experiment it.plasma picture is far superior than led or lcd

Comes down to a single question for me - are there windows behind the seating position that would cause reflections in the tv? If no - or if reflections can be controlled by curtains / blinds etc - then it is is simply Plasma for the best picture quality. If you cannot control these reflections, only then I would even think of LED.

Black levels, realistic colors, excellent performance with SD channels, unmatched performance for seating at angles, artifact-free viewing during high motion scenes - Plasma has these down par excellence. The only drawbacks I can think of is slightly heavier set, little more electricity usage and the need to control reflections (even this has gotten much better over the years). NEVER choose a TV based on how it looks in the store - LED/LCD will ALWAYS look better in the store. Home performance will be nothing like that.

any sd channle will look bad on a 50 inch...simple less data..more data theory..we cant understand it in a 32 inch...but a 50 incher having much area its very easily understood.
buy 50 incher plasma..dont hesitate..yahh samsung or panasnoic thats upto ur personal choice.demo them.seee what picture u are liking?
and i have a 40 inch lcd..belive me sd channles really look very very bad even in 40 inch..so just thionk at 50 inch what will happen.dont worry abvout it.also if possible test with good movei files.tell them showroom to play blu ray disks.

many people are concerned with durability which is lacking in all models, normally we are used to stick on for minimum 5-10 years however due to poor after sales services especially in India of all the companies decision making is taking time. And the attitude of companies has to change with international standards.

Yes, reflections will be there during day, but I can take care of this through curtains.

one advice also..use simple black chart paper alongwith newspaper to use on window(if glass window) to block sunlight.plus good quality skipper or other brand heavy curtain will take care of the rest.u will get 80 % complete black.although complete black will tire your eyes and head.little light(not dirctly on screen) is recomended in tv viewing.enjoy your tv.
