Hello, I would like to connect my current set up with a value for money 5.1 speaker set but confused on how to search for them.

My TV and Airtel HD STB have both Optical Audio Out (TOSLINK), and my Blu-ray player (S1100 from Sony) has a Coaxial Audio Out (S/PDIF).

My budget is max 10K (I know, it's very less). I hope you can guide me in getting the best bang for my buck.

My main question is almost all speakers in my budget have stereo/5.1 inputs. Will there be any difference, in this price range, if I connect the speakers via optical in ?

Speaker choices are;

F&D F6000
Logitech Z506
Edifier DA 5000 Pro

None of your chosen models have optical in.

You need to increase budget to get one with optical-in. Logitech Z906 have various input option-coaxical/optical/rca/3.5mm etc and it also decodes 5.1 onboard. It cost you 17k minimum.

I see that you also own the Z906. What do you feel about its performance ?

My main uses will be;

- Old movie/video songs DVD's
- A few blu-rays
- Lots of downloaded movies (with various types of audio, predominantly DTS 5.1 & then DD 5.1, few of them are DTS 6.1 and remaining AAC, MP3, etc)
- Listening to music is also less.

first the cons- I don't like it for blurays. as it doesn't have HDMI-in, it cant decode the HD audio very well. Highly unsatisfactory. 2ndly, Music doesn't sound good.

Other than that, I like it well. DVDs, rips having ac3 5.1 (DD, DTS) sound very good. Channel separation, bass, dialogues are good for movies. upmixing stereo to 5.1 is quite good too. I had purchased it for 13k so it is a VFM product for me.

Overall, I think it will be best for movie watching and since your content are mainly dvd and rips, it will serve your purpose.

For blurays you need to invest in a good avr+htspeaker or HTIBs.

Wow, at 13K, it's quite a steal. Where did you buy ? Locally or online ?

Its good for movies. And for those who are in tight budget.
oh! That price of 13k was at the initial stage of the launch in india. Now its priced above 17k, i suppose and adding to it because of our so nice dollar rate!!
As gurujjee - mentioned its good - movie watching.
I am not worried about the blu-ray as media player gives me a hand in it.
HD audio - Music - not in my chain now as i am routing through a stereo setup.

Me too in the same league and enjoy movies and for the VFM that it gives. If you can stretch your budget look out for Onkyo 3400/3500 or Yamaha HTIB or Denon in the price range from 24-33K (all entry level HTIB's)
When you have budget, you can go in for separates.

To reiterate - Only for tight budget and if you still think all those entry level HTIB's are away from your reach, you can go for this at below 20K. If you have some coupons in ebay you can try that too. You shall get in discounts.

Thanks for the information :)

What about the Edifier C6XD ? It has optical-in. I don't know it's price, just stumbled on to it.

I had bought it from ebay. The price has increased as sgmane said for current dollar rate. Flipkart may be the cheapest, selling it @17k.

havent heard Edifier C6XD. the model may be hard to find in india, i am not sure though.

as sgmane suggests, if u are looking for vfm and tight budget, go for it
or yamaha 196 htib @ 22k/ yamaha 298/99 @ 30k to look for.

if you have bd player and planning to watch BDs then you should seriously consider HTIBs.
