Hi All
I am new to this and would like to know if anyone can advise if the amp (Onkyo HT-R420) which I have, can be hooked up to a Turntable, using the CD or Tape inputs ?.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help

Hi Dave, thanks for writing in. I took a look at your Receiver's user manual and yes, it does not have a phono input.

To answer your question, you've not mentioned what kind of turntable and cartridge you have. Nevertheless, you will need a dedicated phonostage (which is nothing but a simple preamplifier with RIAA equalization factored) which would go between your turntable and your receiver's CD or Tape inputs. Here's an example:

There are different types of cartridges used with turntables. You'd need a phonostage which matches the type of cartridge.

The usual types found these days are Moving Magnet cartridges (or MM carts). You will also come across higher end Moving Coil cartridges (or MC carts) or simple Vintage Ceramic cartridges (or older still, crystal pickups). Hence a good start would be to ascertain the type of cart on your turntable and take it from there.
