Posting on behalf of a friend. He bought a Bose 901 series 7 and to go with that he bought a Marantz SR70XX. He tells me the sound from the speakers is very lean. Almost sounds like a cheap 2000 rupee speaker. He is now looking to get a proper decent amp to go with his 901. His knowledge is quite poor and he was ill advised earlier. But he can shell out a couple of lacs for the amp.

Please advice a good amp to match his Bose 901. Thanks guys.

Hi

For Bose 901s....it has an Active Equaliser which needs to be fed to a stereo amp.....

So in short...he needs a stereo amp which as PRE OUTs and MAIN IN....The Bose Manual also depicts how the connections has to be done.

Once the Active Equaliser is connected.....the speakers then need to be connected to the Amp directly....

The speaker has NINE drivers which are 50 watts each....that's 450 watts per channel.....ideally at a minimum.....he needs to look for amps which can deliver 150+150 or more watts at 8 ohms load.

Yamaha used to make good amps then....not sure if appropriate heavy ones are available today.

Arcam / Rotel / Cambridge Audio etc possibly could have some amps available....another simple way...visit any Bose store who have 901s on display for demo...see which amp they are currently using....

I’ll recheck on the series. Thanks.

Also will ask him about the equalizer. I’m pretty sure he hasn’t had that setup correctly.thanks guys will get back after checking back with him. Thank you all.

Musical Fidelity M5Si, eyes closed. Will drive the 901's effortlessly.
BTW, Proaudiohome has a deal running on them atm

depends on his budget. at the lower end the yamaha 501 stereo amp pairs well. nad does a good job as well. you could also go with the acoustic portrait (either swara or thiyaga)

My first choice would be the acoustic portrait thiyaga. If youre looking for an international brand then the nad also pairs well with it. the AP though is less expensive and better in SQ. Costs in the region of 1.2 lakhs or thereabouts. You should think of getting a dac into your setup as well

So it’s a series vi, I asked my friend.

He is interested in the acoustic portrait. Is it a pre and power? Anyone using it currently?

I have the pre power model. Very clean sound. Punches above its weight. They now have an integrated model. There are a couple of reviews on this forum. From what i've heard, pretty much similar in sound.

And will definately power the 901’s? He was ill advised earlier and he ended up with something useless. If anyone is using the integrated amp, could u kindly please give me a shout. Thanks guys.

Hi

From what I know....the person connected the speakers directly to the Marantz AVR and could not connect the active EQ....

An AVR is or was never suitable for a 901. Unless using a 5 channel power and processor. Ask your friend to use the Marantz AVR as a processor and connect a Usher R6.0 or likes of a 5/6 channel power amp or a powerful stereo amp dlfor the fronts. This Bose thrives on power and placement. Placement is as crucial as the current required here for a 901 to shine. Regards

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
