There are a couple of forts build by Shivaji where communication use to happen from the plains and the forts using TL technology. There use to be some kind of a Transmission Line in the forts where commanders use to speak and it was heard miles away. I visited one such fort at Nashik some 10 years ago. Also there is a Vitthoba temple at Titawala some 80Kms away from Mumbai where in one of the tube Bhajans from Pandharpur can be heard which is around 500KMs away. The Mughals were always surprised about how Shivaji use to communicate between regions, but little did they realize that TL technology was helping him to communicate and he was a master in the technology.

If you happen to be in any of these places then do give a ear to them and you can actual hear the Bhajans at the Vitthal temple at Titwala which is very quite clear even from a distance of 500Kms.

Hari Sir, I was fortunate enough to visit the 'Imambada' in Lucknow. Its a big fort and had various security 'features'. The guide showed us many place where one could speak or almost whisper closely against the walls and other people, standing at other places of the fort could hear the whisper clearly when they put their ears against the wall! This feature was among many others, like there were multiple places in the fort from where you can see everyone coming into the fort, but they cannot see you...like some windows, or even reflection in water!

Your post reminded me of that visit!

Thanks for posting,

Saket

Hari,

Great topic. I don't think Shivaji was the only one who had this know how. The Golconda Fort here in Hyderabad has numerous examples of this. Still its a pretty amazing technology and to think that they were able to use it back in those days is phenomenal.

Recently I had visited Hyderabad but unfortunately I could not visit the fort. I too have heard about the capillary system for raising water and the acoustics of the Golconda fort. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see it on my next visit.
