I ordered recently but have not received the item yet. The shipping charges are close to 3.5 pounds per item.

Yes, but try and keep order value incl. shipping between INR 3000 to 5000 so as not to catch the eye of our esteemed customs dept.

I placed an order just now for 45.64 .it is calculated 36.10 + 9.54(shipping charges).

A week ago I ordered 5 sets of Bluray containing 12 discs. The cost was GBP 35.26 and shipping GBP 9.54.

The calculation is correct. 20% of the product cost which is VAT, is discounted as it is an export and hence the product price drops down GBP-36, from face value of GBP-45. For details please refer to the thread of Kix.

I placed an order for some region free BluRay boxsets on amazon.com .. indeed the shipping is free if order value is above 125 USD. Still a great price after computing exchange rate. That takes care of most of the customs fee, hope it gets delivered in good shape!

Don't worry the packaging & shipping is first class. Just keep a tab on which courier service they are using. I heard that i-parcel is not that good. Apart from that Aramex & DHL are good. It normally takes 2 weeks to reach you.

All, not just most, of the customs duty is taken care of by the Import Fee Deposit charged by Amazon US. You will not have to pay even a single paisa more. If the courier person tries to extract money out of you, give them hell. Keep a print of the Amazon International Shipping page ready.

Also if customs duty is not charged, you will get a refund of the Import Fee Deposit in about 60 days post shipment date.
