Hey guys

I was wondering if anyone on here ever tried selling any records from here to people aboard in US, Europe, etc? I may have a few records I want to sell that are quite rare and may not get the same prices in India as one would internationally. If anyone has done it, maybe you can post your experiences doing it online and how you dealt with shipping, costs, etc.

Cheers

Maybe selling off eBay and Amazon?

Another idea off the top of my head is to signup with musicstack. They are a networked Online Vinyl store who do not stock any LPs with them. They are just well networked through a single platform. They have multiple Vinyl suppliers. The rest on shipping etc, you can have a chat with them.

Hi. I think the best (cheapest) way to ship it internationally would be to use the Indian Postal Service. The price is quite reasonable (as compared to Fedex, Bluedart, etc..their charges are just RIDICULOUS!).

India Post | Tools | Speed Post Rate Calculator | International

For about 1 kg (that would be about 1-3 LPs + packaging) shipping to U.S. comes to about 1.3k. Quite reasonable if you ask me. And if you have some really rare ones, the fans wouldn't mind paying around 20$ for shipping. I sent a package to a friend in Japan once using Indian postal service (not an LP though). I dont remember the weight but it costed around 600 INR. It went quite smoothly.

So i'd say open up a seller's account on Ebay or Discogs, visit your local post office to confirm the rates and i guess you should be ready to go.

However you need to be careful with the packaging. Indian postal service generally doesn't care too much about what's inside the box (I've had bad experiences with other items). So bubble wrapping the LP would be a must IMO.

There are a bunch of eBay dealers based in India (check out the World Music section-India) who offer Hindi film music and classical LPs at crazy prices. They must be selling some for sure, given the large Indian diaspora with deep pockets.

I've occasionally considered selling off a few collectibles meself, but have held back because of all the hassles regarding correct grading, insurance, packaging and finally delivery through the Postal service. Especially if you've got top bracket items, you don't want them lost or broken in transit, or a buyer who has a dispute regarding grading. You also need time to establish a high score of positive feedback as a seller before potential buyers are willing to put bids down for truly collectible (and high value) items.

Very true. Also ebay rules are heavily loaded in favour of the buyer. When you sell on ebay and ship, you are expected to provide the courier tracking number. For some reason, if the indian courier company does not update the courier tracking details, the buyer can always claim that he did not receive the package and claim a refund. Ebay guys never believe the seller's story in such cases. This is a problem noted mostly when India Post is used.

Yeah I was thinking of eBay/Discogs/Musicstack, etc. As a test I just shipped a CD to a friend in London. Cost me Rs 127 to send it via India Post. Lets see how long it takes to reach.

For packing, I have a lot of boxes that come whenever i get records shipped to me, also Flipkart boxes. Would probably use those.

Think I will try it at some point down the line, for now, I think i'm going to sell my records here on the forum :) Gonna post some rock lots for sale soon in the For Sale section, if anyone is interested.

Looking forward to your posting Tek !

That's one of the few really positive things about Flipkart! Those extra large air bubble wraps they use to wrap LPs are fantastic. :ohyeah: I've received quite a few records from them with absolutely no damage!

That's brilliant! Looking forward to it! By the way, what kind of albums would you be selling? can you name a few bands? :licklips:

Yes, very much interested. Please post them asap. Pressing is Indian or foreign ?
Thanks

Thanks for the interest guys, I have submitted my post in the For Sale section, so once it gets approved by the mods it should be up there. Pressings are a mixture of Indian and Foreign, with more Foreign ones. Some pretty rare ones in there too, have a look once the post goes live.

Cheers!

Hey folks, just wanted to revive this thread... i never got around to selling off some stuff but now I'm thinking I might sell some of the big ticket items abroad.. I have some contacts with some other online forums/communities where I can sell directly to other members, so I am pretty sure there will be buyers. However, just a bit curious about the whole customs declarations, receiving funds, dealing with tax stuff here, etc. Since my last post, has anyone successfully sold any stuff abroad?

Hi tek. Last month I sold an LP to a guy in Berlin. The package was around 460 grams. Sent it via DTDC International. They charged 1354 (DHL was asking 4.7k!!!). It was a door-to-door delivery..meaning the DTDC guys did not hand it over to the local German post office. Tracking no. was also included. It reached in 15-16 days (though they said it wouldn't take more than a week :indifferent14:) Anyway, the package was received safely. The buyer did not have to pay any customs.

Thanks for the info. Did you declare the item as a gift when you were sending it?

No. Did not do that. I guess at the end of the day..the customs thing depends on luck. Because even for big parcels (5+ records) sometimes they never charge. Don't know how it works..

If you got old hindi movie music, I'd be interested. I'm in the US, I'd have to buy 20-30+ to be feasible though. Geeta Dutt and Hemanth Kumar especially.
Hell I'll take cd's too.
I have a lot of easy access to english LP's cheap. We can try to send em from here. Outbound mail via US mail, I can send it cheap via "media mail". Dont know if it helps outside US.
Cool.
Srinath.

No Hindi unfortunately!

Ok. Anyway I can get most english very very reasonable priced. Usually $1 or so.
Of course Beatles and pink floyd and other famous ones are more, I've paid up to $20 for A perfect copy of abbey road, and DSOTM. But the usual price is $1.
And I also can get classical for $1 most of the time. Like Mozart 40 and mozart 41 by berlin harmonic orchestra pressing by Deutche Grammophon for $1. Dont expect mint, but it should play alright. These are afterall 20-40 years old.

If someone is interested, let me know. I'll see wha tI can round up and send out. Outbound mail is cheaper via media mail, but I dont know if international it makes a difference.

Cool.
