I will be in Tokyo for week on a business trip and was wondering if it makes sense (cost wise) to buy/bring any HiFi or electronics stuff from Japan.

Any suggestions?

If you are into LPs, do check out the 'shimokitazawa' area. Lots of good LP pressings available. My wife was in Tokyo a few months ago and picked up a couple of very nice LPs for me :). She also mentioned that there were lots of hi-fi and music stores in this area.

Best.

Fostex drivers if you want to make a back loaded horn speaker set!

Go to Akihabara and get lost in that electronic market.
Buy a good step down transformer too if you made for Japan product. International one will work in India too!
If you are into photography, you will be in heaven in those days in Japan.

thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I am keen on things that make sense to buy in Japan cost wise. However i been searching online Japanese shops and seems like there is not much that is cheaper in Japan(as compared to US/India).

If you're ok with buying used,. go to Shinjuku and Akihabara. Some very good deals are available.

You have woken up to the reality. I wanted to make the same suggestion when you posted this thread, but didn't want to discourage you.

Japan is NOT at all cheap for Hifi. If anything, its more expensive. HOWEVER, sometimes you land up with used gear which won't be available in other markets, forget the price. For example: a few months ago I came across a deal on an exotic Audio Note tube amp. Price was too tempting. Too bad I didn't act soon enough and it was snapped.

Moral of the story: if you go to Japan, don't look for "deals", you will be disappointed. However, if you go there looking for "exotica", you may be highly rewarded.

Plus, be ready to have serious heartburns. Japanese hifi markets are no different than Japanese porn. They are full of exotica.

Good luck with your trip!

I am a huge Japanophile and have been a few times. Although things are expensive, you really get what you pay for. I am not able to recommend hifi stores etc. but there are a couple of things I enjoyed. One was looking for rare Cds and masterings and the other was eating! If you want to try a lot and have fun doing it, go to the basement of any big departmental store...they will have tens of stalls, each specializing in some type of food and you can order a little of each and it's all not very expensive.

Japan has two kinds of electronics products (mass market) - one for domestic market and another for International markets. The Japanese voltage is a strange 100V (not 110). So generally hard to find a transformer. The costs are cheaper for domestic versions, but you may find no warranty outside or menus in Japanese, so be careful.

The costs of some mass market stuff like high end TV's and DSLR's are cheaper than in other markets.

Places like Akhiabara, you will get lost with options, but may not find anything significant. Do your search for exact shops and then go to these places, to make it more useful.

Just look for the 'used' products ....

HiFiDo Audio

Man .. o man, what a range available! However, the 'required' quality step-down transformer too is to be procured from there .... IMO.
