Article: Intel explains how USB-C could be far better than the headphone jack

Well. This was bound to happen. If given a choice to eliminate a jack (+ associated ckt) on the board and move the function to an existing connector, HW engineers will jump at the idea.
The size-0 trend in smartphones will move the audio DAC from phone to headphone. The HP makers will reap benefits here.

^^ Indeed. There really isn't a whole lot of hardware-based innovation they can put into smartphones any more. 'Thinner' would likely be the preferred marketing mantra.

I'm sure that the death of the headphone jack will be trumpeted as a break from shackles and limitations and so on and so forth. The phone manufacturers will thin the phones down further as a smokescreen, save money off the lesser electronics content in the phone, and start selling headphones with built in DACs themselves. They will also probably offer (foe sale, of course) half-way solutions, like a unit that will take data from the phone wirelessly, and into which we can plug regular 3.5mm jacks of "legacy" ear/head phones.

Folks who need portable audio, and need to buy a new phone will likely have to pony up for a new ear/headphone. I doubt if phones will come with a headphone/earphone in the box anymore ( = more savings and possibility for accessory-sales for the manufacturer).

negatives
- this audio interface over usb C may implement some DRM etc which is bound to drive up costs
- No charging the phone while listening to music
-dac's in cheap earbuds are bound to be worse than that of your typical mobile

Anything intel claims as a benefit for USB C can be done on a bluetooth headphone or the existing usb port
any size related issues could be fixed with a 2.5mm audio jack

I sincerely hope this initiative flops

Bound to happen. Would be a good thing if everybody adopted it.

But will be hard for audio... as it is USB has not been perfected in DACs... now probably will need USB C to USB 2/3 connectors or DACs and AVRs willl need USB C inputs.

I've had the Nexus for a while now... and even today its the only device with USB C and it does not physically connect with any other device at home. Not really an issue as I use BubbleUPnP on it and photos are synced/sent wirelessly to the Synology... but it goes to show most of the existing h/w will not connect to it... meaning a lot of spending to upgrade all h/w in and around the house or it has be primarily a wireless device.

Got an iPhone7/7S and still have 3.5mm jack based wired IEMs. Aiyeee ... How caveman of you. Don't worry all is not lost.
Get your ear pierced and sport an earring. Affix the Airpod to the ring and look cool.
If you are on a bus/train and someone is sitting next to you, use that 3.5 mm plug to tickle them.
