I am now planning to setup a sterio system. having gone through the forum I now know that i need a good stereo amplifier and speakers apart from a decent source. the decent source i.e. the cd player will have to wait for some time and will use the existing DVD player as source.

However I have 3 main question on which i need guidance.
1) I am planning to buy two good book shelves for the stereo. I also want to use these as the L/R fronts for my HTs3400. Is there a way i can setup my book shelves to a stereo amp and the AVR and use them as either stereo speakers or ht speakers as the need may be.

2) i have also read so much on DAC's lately and am a bit confused of what role it plays is it between the source and amp or amp and speakers.

3) with a budget of around 40000 which stereo amp and speakers would you recommend.

Really appreciate if you could help on these two.

IF your AVR has front channel Preouts then yes, it can be done . If not . you need a switch to swap between amps

A Dac does the exact same thing a CDP or your existing DVDp does ..
Basically convert digital data stored on your CD or PC to Analogue data , which your Speaker can understand and reproduce.

Its a Ocean out there and auditioning is the best option ... A/V shops in Pune you can visit AVxellence (DP Road), Aquarius (East Street), Sound Factor ( East Street ) to name a few

however considering your budget
you can look at

WHarfedale 9.2/10.2 + Yamaha AS500 or Marantz PM6004
PSB B1 + NAD 326
Aviano 2 + CA 650

There are many other combinations you can look at. But first you need to start auditioning

at your budget the usher s520 is a very good option. you can also look at the kef q series and the monitor audio bronze bx2. once you decide on speakers we can help you with an amp to match

am not sure if its readily available but you can sure some sort of a switch.

Its a huge task to put up a decent stereo setup and depend on many things like -
1) the type of music you listen to
2) the size of the room
3) How loud do you listen to in general
4) the sound signature that you prefer -
-bright&forward,
-smooth and warm
-sublime, laidback yet detailed etc etc

All these factors comes into play when you are deciding on a stereo setup.

Absolutely true heres my specs

I listen to mostly koshore mohd rafi lata and asha i.e. old hindi somngs gazals english pop and some instrumentals at very low volumes. These songs are meant to relax me and not wake me up so i assume this is sublime laidback but detailed room specs 11x17

We may safely consider that Indian recordings are bright and old Bollywood music will need lesser headroom. NAD comes to my mind to smoothen that brightness. Go for a NAD according to your budget. Marantz PM5003 is also a good product.

Would need to pair speakers that goes well with NAD, which is bit brighter side like PSB or Monitor Audio or Mordaunt Short (Aviano 2). You may consider a B&W if your budget permits. That will be a lifetime investment.

First audition, audition and audition with your favourite music on a CD to settle a pair speaker. After that you can carry the speakers with you to different audition room for the Amplifier.
1) Speakers - PSB Alpha B1, MA BX2 and MS Aviano 2, Epos
2) Amplifier - NAD, Marantz, Cambridge Audio (if you like Aviano 2)

Are you open to buy used products?

Why not an norge 2060->9.1 & 2or gold 1k-> 10.1 or 10.2...perfectly within 40k...he will even have spare money for good Ic and cables:-) for laidback listening i think it would be perfect...marantz pm5003 with 10.1 is what i used but occasionly can be bit bright! But overall superb budget setup at that price!

Heard lot about Norge but never audition it. Marantz & Wharfedale will be a bright combination. Moreover 10.x series is not as good as their 8 or 9 series. Thats why I didn't mention Wharf here.
