Buy the standard edition (2D only) for 10.00 and save 7.99. Use the money saved to buy another title.

?? avatar 3d is rare stuff , it was only available free with panasonic tvs that too limited time . if one want to watch 3d why he will buy 2d ?

avatar 3d is regarded one of best 3d movies ,i haven't watched in 3d but heard lot from others.2d is available since ages

I just bought it in 2D - Steelbook extended edition last month, if I would have known about this coming I would have for sure waited. But for now I do not have a 3D TV so, I'm okay with a 2D version.

Nevertheless, the 3D would have made a great purchase which doubles up with a 2D disc as well.

Even I thought Avatar 3D is rare stuff. I tried in lots of places and only found one with Amazon US and that too it was priced very high. I guess more than $100.

I would really appreciate if any one can point me to a store in India where I can get Avatar 3-D for similar prices offered in Amazon.de

Thanks,
John.

Just found that this 3D edition of Avatar is the barebones edition and does not come with the extended features nor the extras but just the new 3D version of the film.

So, in that case I feel that this is just marketing, first, releasing an extended edition and then a 3D edition without the extras.

Next, from Fox a 3D version of the extended edition with all the extras intact. Ha! Ha! :clapping:

OK. Here are some of the many reasons that I do not like Avatar even though technically it is superb:
  • For a first 3D movie of its kind, the characters of the movie are just one dimensional. The Na'vi are just too good while the humans, with the exception of the protagonists, are all evil.
  • The bone of contention is the mineral called "Unobtanium". Really? Couldn't think of any better name.
  • Unobtanium is wanted because it is invaluable. Not because the survival of human race depends upon it.
  • Our hero does not really have to make a choice - good Na'vi, evil humans. Hmm. Scales tip heavily on one side.
  • Would Jake find making a choice difficult if the Na'vi were not all that good, humans just too evil, and would he have not found the choice very difficult if it was a choice of saving Na'vi vs. the extinction of his own race? What then?
  • And finally, I have just one suggestion. Go and watch Dances with the Wolves and then let us compare the themes. Here is the snapshot:
In 1863, First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is injured in the American Civil War. Rather than having his leg amputated, he takes a horse and rides up to the Confederate front lines, distracting them in the process. The roused Union army then attacks and the battle ends a Confederate rout. Dunbar survives, is allowed to properly recover, receives a citation for bravery and is awarded Cisco, the horse who carried him, as well as his choice of posting. Dunbar requests a transfer to the western frontier so he can see its vast terrain before it goes. Dunbar arrives at his new post, Fort Sedgwick, but finds it abandoned and in disrepair. Despite the threat of nearby Native American tribes, he elects to stay and man the post himself. He begins rebuilding and restocking the fort and prefers the solitude afforded him, recording many of his observations in his journal.

Dunbar initially encounters his Sioux neighbors when several attempts are made to steal his horse and intimidate him. In response, Dunbar decides to seek out the Sioux camp in an attempt to establish a dialogue. On his way he comes across Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell), who has injured herself in mourning of her deceased husband. She is the white adopted daughter of the tribe's medicine man Kicking Bird (Graham Greene), as her white family was killed by the Pawnee tribe when she was young. Dunbar returns her to the Sioux to be treated, which changes their attitude toward him. Eventually, Dunbar establishes a rapport with Kicking Bird and warrior Wind In His Hair (Rodney A. Grant) who equally wish to communicate. Initially the language barrier frustrates them, so Stands With A Fist, though with difficulty remembering her English, acts as translator.

Dunbar finds himself drawn to the lifestyle and customs of the tribe and begins spending most of his time with them. Learning their language, he becomes a hero among the Sioux and is accepted as an honored guest after he locates a migrating herd of buffalo and participates in the hunt. When at Fort Sedgwick, Dunbar also befriends a wolf he dubs "Two Socks" for its white forepaws. When the Sioux observe Dunbar and Two Socks chasing each other, they give him his Sioux name "Dances with Wolves". During this time, Dunbar also forges a romantic relationship with Stands with a Fist and helps defend the village from an attack by the rival Pawnee. Dunbar eventually wins Kicking Bird's approval to marry Stands with a Fist, and abandons Fort Sedgwick.

Because of the growing Pawnee and white threat, Chief Ten Bears (Floyd Red Crow Westerman) decides to move the tribe to its winter camp. Dunbar decides to accompany them but must first retrieve his journal from Fort Sedgewick. However, when he arrives he finds it occupied by the U.S. Army. Because of his Sioux clothing, the soldiers mistake him for a Native and open fire, killing Cisco and capturing Dunbar. Sgt Baur (Larry Joshua) interrogates him, but Dunbar cannot prove his situation as soldier Spivey (Tony Pierce) secretly steals his journal. As a result, along with Dunbar's refusal to serve as an interpreter to the tribes, he is put on trial for treason and transported back east as prisoner. While traveling in the armed caravan, the soldiers kill Two Socks when the wolf attempts to follow Dunbar.

Eventually the Sioux track the convoy, killing the soldiers and freeing Dunbar. At the winter camp, Dunbar decides to leave with Stands With A Fist since his status will put the tribe in danger. As they leave, Wind In His Hair shouts across to Dunbar, reminding him of their friendship. U.S. troops are seen searching the mountains but are unable to locate them, while a lone wolf howls in the distance. An epilogue states that thirteen years later, the last remnants Sioux were subjugated to the American government, ending the conquest of the Western frontier states and the livelihoods of the tribes in the plains.

So apart from technological marvel and completely redefining 3D to the extent of inventing it, I am afraid that Avatar does not do it for me. In fact, there were parts of the movie, where I remember dozing off.

Cameron initially stated that Avatar would be released in 3D around November 2010, but the studio issued a correction: "3-D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar will not be out on 3D Blu-ray in November."In May 2010, Fox stated that the 3D version would be released some time in 2011. It was later revealed that Fox had given Panasonic an exclusive license for the 3D Blu-ray version and only with the purchase of a Panasonic 3DTV. The length of Panasonic's exclusivity period is stated to last until February 2012. On October 2010, Cameron stated that the standalone 3D Blu-ray would be the final version of the film's home release and that it was, "maybe one, two years out". On August 13, 2012, Cameron announced on Facebook that Avatar would be released globally on Blu-Ray 3D.
