Hi,

Can one explain me specifically the exact meaning of avi format, xvid format, divx format (i know it is spelt backwards of xvid) and mpeg4.

Are they commonly referred as the formats which we download from the net. Do they possess any specific differences. I also an aware that mkv formats also do exist. But I would like to know the main differences between the avi, divx, xvid and mpeg4. Do the dvd players which are capable of playing avi formats can play xvid as well. Pl let me know.

Regards

All are known as codecs developed by different companies but technologoy more or less the same except with mkv or mp4 formats.

AVI is container while divx/xvid are the codes. A video file can be compressed using any codec and be kept in any container. h.264 is also a codec (which is the best available today). Another examples for container can be MKV, MP4, 3GP....etc etc. BluRays todays are usually compressed using h.264 codec and packed within MKV container, coz that gives the best result and MKV as a container is very versatile.

A player should not only be able to play the codec but also should be able to recoganize the container. So if a dvd player can recogonize AVI files should also be able to play divx/xvid codecs for the file to play properly.........same is the case with media players.......
