Guys, I have a serious problem. My setup HAS TO BE an AVR (at least as of now). Can not afford to have a separate HT and audio setup. This is part of research before I make the final purchases.

I was just wondering if some one has hooked on a TT to an AVR and how was the experience? Will there be a need for a phono preamp? I am planning on Marantz SR 6005 and ProJect Debut III TT. I am very much open to changes and suggestions. I know about AVR being not a true audiophile equipment but I have to live with it for sometime.

Second question : Would there be a difference in the SQ if media is played by a media player (only FLACs and WAVs) or a CDP? If yes, then Would that be a noticeable difference to not so audiophile ears?

How is SR 6005 as an AVR wrt Denon 1911? I know its priced higher. As would have guessed that I was want an AVR which does good justice to audio too!

We recently had the Pune HFV meet and we did test a Denon TT but it was connected to a 2 channel amp. You can read the details here. Sonosphere is doing a wonderful job compiling the results. I am sure it will give you some idea and also help with your new purchase..

Your source surely makes a difference. I own a xtreamer and not very happy about its sound output. If I play a wav file from xtreamer versus the same file from the USB port on the AVR there is a difference. Playing the file via the AVR's USB give me better bass, bigger sound stage and much more clarity. This is how I generally play my ripped files.

Couple years back I was in the same boat and comparing the Marantz with the Denon. I finally settled for the Marantz SR6003 AVR. I liked it because I wanted to use it for music/stereo also. I felt it to be more melodious and neutral sounding than the Denon.

Let me know if I can be of any help in your decision. Good luck with the hunt.

hubballi : thanks for the reply. I am yet to go through the 20-odd pages of the Pune Meet.

But my question about TT was different. I dont want a review of Denon TT but I want to know if its feasible to connect a TT to an AVR and do some justice to it.

It looks like I will have to invest in a CDP to get best result. So be it. Some more search :).

BTW, I loved this idea of meet. Wish I am able to attend some in the future. Way to go guys! :yahoo:

Was the xtreamer connected to the AVR using analogue(xtreamer dac) or digital ports(avr dac), the AVR dac would be superior to the one on the xtreamer.

As long as you have an phono pre-amp, a TT can be connected to any amplifier. Most modern AVRs come with pure direct and stereo mode, and they sound very close to a 2 channel amp around the same price.

A media player with a good DAC (either as an external unit or as part of the AVR) is also a good choice eliminating the need for a CDP.

Ultimately, all these are technical points. Whether you will like it can only be confirmed by your ears.

Cheers

It was connected via Toslink still the difference. For testing I switched the amp to pure direct mode and I could still experience the difference. Strange but true.

The Denon used during the meet had a built-in phono, so it can be connected directly to the AVR or Amp with RCA cables. I presume, this is what you wanted to know.

In case of TT without built in phono, you need an external phono to connect it to AVR or Amp (unless you have phono-in in your amp.)
Regards.

Thanks for the reply. Thats exactly what I wanted to know. So, for the setup I am looking for with Marantz SR6005 or Denon 1911, I should either plan to buy a TT with a phono equaliser else plan to buy phono preamp.

Yamaha RX-V667 model from UK/Singapore has Phono-Input. With this you can connect a TT with out built-in phono equaliser and also no need for a separate phono pre-amp.
