Recently i was facing some issues with my Home Theater set up. The video was going on and off and it was getting quite irritating (audio was fine). I called up the TV folks and they said its not the TV's issue, but the AVR HDMI slot seems to be faulty. That made me call up the Yamaha service center in Kolkata and they suggested something which I was not expecting. I was told that all AVR's need to be serviced regularly and need to be opened up and cleaned, without which such issues are common and eventually the processor stops working.
I finally figured out that the cause of my current problem was a faulty HDMI cable. The set up works just like before once I replaced it.
But the question I want to put forth on this forum is, do we really need to service AVR's once every year? Does anybody do it regularly and does it have any benefits?
I was under the impression that its better not to fiddle around with electronics products unless its necessary.

I am also of your view to not fiddle with it , however it should be ensured that it's in dust free environment, without voltage fluctuations, proper cable management ( cables shall have appropriate length - not too tightly connected with devices).

Not so sure about periodic maintenance of the AVR. The main concern is dust accumulation over a period of time due to the top vents in AVR.
Covering the AVR when not in use would prevent dust. Cleaning the speaker terminals and HDMI ports is also good thing to do. Recently I have done that.

Though blowing off the accumulated dust is good, don't think servicing is necessary every year..I don't remember dusting my previous Onkyo AVR's..Have used them for a good 3 yrs time without cleaning..

Yamaha AVR used for 5 years. Subsequently, Denon AVR used for 6+. Never serviced. All I did was light daily dusting to clear external dust and occasional blowing inside with compressed air to clear internal dust. Kept all AV equipment in a relatively dust and sunlight free area of the house. Don't think anything more is necessary.

Dear FM, I have done preventive service my Denon AVR six months ago just for dust, moisture , contacts cleaning. They just clean the internal parts, contacts, speakar terminals etc and apply CRC cleaner to avoid corrosion or rusting of connectors, contactors, jumpers and switches. This indeed increase the life of AVR. Regular preventive service once in two years is advisable.
