Hi, this has nothing to do with audio.
However this forum is so rich in knowledge and good intentions that I couldn't help creating this thread to seek some information for a family friend.
She is about 30, a doctor by profession in London. Her MRI shows disc prolapse with nerve root compression. She has tried everything- osteopaths, chiropractors etc. The only thing left is a complicated surgery.
However before she exercises that option she wants to seek out some ayurvedic massage therapy about which she has heard a lot of good things.
If there is any member who has some/any information on this we would be much obliged if they could share it here.
Thanks in advance.

prolapsed L3-L5. twice. but that was a while back.

The *only* way to keep it in control (and that is ***all*** that can be done, you cannot rehydrate/ regrow the cartlilage etc, no jhaad phoonk cream that you apply is of any use, I understand that the surgery is not a cure either) is exercise, correct posture etc.

The problem is a mechanical one. As an ortho friend explained it to "imagine a toothpaste tube with the cap off. You step on it, the paste will ooze out. There is a gelatinous goop in a cartilage housing between the vertebrae. If it oozes it makes contact with the spinal cord and you see colors and lights and can't move. (I could not twitch my toe for two days, the pain that slight movement would cause was so bad)

The cap once gone is lost, forever. you just gotta stop stepping on the tube.

You do that by keeping the stuff that supports your spine - which are the muscles in the abdomen and down the back of your leg. You learn to lift heavy stuff without bringing your back into it (normal pressure on the goopy stuff is like 20 psi which can go up to 300 if your are bending and lifting something heavy - figures from memory I am sure of the 10-15 fold increase but not the actual numbers). You learn to sit with a correct posture. You learn to sell your royal enfield bullet and buy a sporty bike that has somewhat rearset pegs so your knees are not along for the ride but are shock absorbers etc.

Now I don't care who is playing air guitar when I am listening to slash. Yane ki, correct exercise/ posture with the usual precautions ke saath jo marzee kar lo, credit that alternate or alternates too, you may have lost time/ money unnecessarily but you will be pain free.

edit: any one who asks you to lie flat on your back and stare at the ceiling is a quack. the atrophy is quciker than you think

ciao

Thanks sound_cycle for taking the time to share. She is in some pain and is looking for some relief. I thought I could help her out by seeking some information on the ayurvedic options available.

moktan, there are other therapies available, some holistic. Would you be willing to try out any?

Dear friend,

Yes control is correct word, but nothing can regrow cartilage is partially correct. If you talk about modern science, then you are correct, but if you talk about Ayurveda, then yes it can improve it to some extend.I have seen patients with Spondylolisthesis improved much after Ayurvedic Treatments and yes Physiotherapy without need of any pain killer further.Physiotherapy is best solution after treatment. It depends totally on patients reports and depth of issue.
Also knee problem which is very common,pn more than half times the issue can be totally reversed even at the age of 80+.And treatment can be total stopped.

@Moktan-As she is chances of recovery is more and avoid possible surgery.Ayurveda treatment need proper diet too.Only massage is not solution, but proper Ayurvedic treatment should help.

Thanks doctor. Your words reassure us. If you have any pointers on the specific ayurvedic therapy that could help her, the info would be most welcome.

Well I prefer Kerala Ayurvedic treatment. They have good variety of Herbal medicines. If you can locate a good Kerala Treatment center, you can consult them before you start treatment.Again it depends on Doctor's experience how can he handle the case as special.
I have seen patient having Slipped Disk(literally hanging)could avoid surgery after treatment of 4 months.Where are you located?

I have sent a private message.
I am located in Kalimpong (Darjeeling) WB. However this is for a relative in the UK. She is herself a doctor by training and is willing to travel for treatment.

I would like to thank all for their interest in this thread and for their very informative and enlightening responses.
The person in question has been provided with some very solid options.
As things stand, I have shared all info with her and now leave it up to her to follow up on what she things would be best for her.
Because disc prolapse seems to be a common problem I will update this thread if I have any specific information that could be useful to our esteemed members.

p.s. This not the first time I have sought information of a medical nature in this forum. My earlier plea was with regard to some specialized information on heart surgery for a relative. Even then generous and informed members had chipped in with their suggestions. The replies to this thread and the personal messages I have shared have reaffirmed my belief about the quality of intellect and empathy level of our forum members. Long may it remain so.

I wish good luck to your friend and speedy recovery.

Though so far, I have battled 3 problems with spinal chord final issue remains compression at L3-L5. I can say I am able to avoid surgery in last case and get relief by day to day exercise suggested by one Naturopath Doctor. Initial Massage and then my constant exercises include walking and some basic Yoga Aasanas helped me a lot. Posture consciousness helps a lot.

Though I can't run but tie my shoe laces. I can mention my job includes 12-hrs sitting in day.

I had spondilitys for almost 5 years and got excellent relief by using accupressure treatment. Diet plays a major role in all holistic treatment. Also some yoga postures and breathing excersise helps in healing.

I suffered disc bulge while playing Golf in 2010. I had undergone what is known as "Marma Vaidyam" The treatment comprised of consumption of some powdery substance (choornam) that smelt disgusting, some blackish goo (lehyam) which left a typical after taste like that of cinnamon, some medicinal balls and a massage done in a certain way specifically touching certain pressure points on the back with some medicinal oil for about 6 weeks. The results were dramatic and I got rid of the pain completely.

I resumed Golfing and next year, at about the same time, I got it again. This time, that Marma doctor was not in station so I was admitted into a regular Hospital where I was advised traction and Phisiotherapy. Traction was quickly abandoned as it worsened the situation. Physiotherapy comprised of Shortwave Dithermy (SWD), Interferential Theraphy (IFT) and exercises. Improvement was marginal. Then on advise of my colleagues, I went to 'Vasudeva Vilasam' at Trivandrum for treatment comprising of detoxification process called 'Panchkarma', pouring of warm medicated oil called Pizhichil, padding the affected areas with some medicated paste in cotton pads called Kizhi, 'Abhyangana message' etc. for 2 or 3 weeks. There was improvement but was not as effective as the 'Marma Vaidyam'

Coming back to present, I managed to pop out the same disc again just three weeks back while working on the lawn. After two day rest, my neighbour summoned a masseur who is an expert in marma kala. Though he (rightly) recommended 7 sessions, I wanted to get back to office in three days. Just 3 messages later, I was ok to the extent of 75%

To cut the long story short, as per my experience, Marma Vaidyam is the most effective treatment for backache.

Edit:
I mean backache due to disc bulge/ prolapse.
