with the launch of the sony bdp-s370 at 9990/-

can it be taken as a competition for the media player ranging from
8-12k

my usage will be specifically for playing mkv movies.

bdrip,720p,1080p (2gig-14gig)

as far as the information is provided sony bdp can play all these through usb.

i wudn't need internet as i have seperate download rig comfigured.

just movies.. not even music.

taking into consideration that same price we can play br discs as wel in future once the price goes down.

what the best bet.... xtreamer(media player) or bdp (sony bdp-s370)

Well i don't own any of them but it is a very tough and interesting choice both have wifi support and both are priced the same, but i believe the xtreamer reads NTFS partitioned storage device ,the BDP has better audio support.

yes i was quite intrested for xtreamer since months and with the release of xtreamer with side winder model i was plannin to go for it.. however sony knocked my senses.. just curious..
i got 5.1 logi z-5500 and that got optical and coax in.. sony gives5.1 through optical..that is solved..
just wanted a conformation that will it be able to mkv's as these are the mojor chuck of my downloads.. and thats the only reason for me getting a media player to watch hd on tv..... even i buy a media player.. i wont ad internal hdd.. just external hdd or usb drives.

gurus inputs please..

bdp v/s media player.. best bet...

Even I'll look to buy a BluRay Player which plays MKV. NTFS support will be a plus, but nevertheless, I'm waiting for the Blurays to grow a little more, and the BDP prices will also fall very soon... This is the tipping point, I'll wait another 6 months or so... But you are right, I would definitely go for a single player that plays everything.

Go for the Sony BDP 370 man.Why a media player ??? These are all piracy accelerator. Why should we at all consider mkp,mp4,avi,rip bla bla bla.So go for a dedicated player and buy original BD and DVD.

@ironhorse a strict word of caution, I am very sure this player would not play high bitrate MKVs and Divx, infact I am skeptical if at all this would play ripped files correctly, if your objective is MKVs and rips off the net, media player IS THE best solution .... mark my word for this .... Get WD TV Gen 2 if you are on a budget, you would still land up far better that buying this player (again if MKVs and rips is your prime objective)....

EDIT ::: I was right @ironhorse, just read the reviews from Sony website ......

Special attention to the following one ....

One of the main reasons I purchased this player was to play files stored on external backup media. The files I attempted to play were the very ordinary avi files. According to it's manual, it should have done that. In fact, avi files were shown as playable media. As far as I was concerned, this player useless to me. Upon return of this item, I spoke with a sales assistant about it. He confidentially said that Sony deliberately blocked the playing of these types of files because they have a vested interest in the entertainment industry and quoted piracy as one of their concerns. In any case, the player (manual) should have stated that. Therefore, this player and the information regarding its many functions was deliberately misleading. In closing, I purchased a comparable Samsung blu ray player. It played avi files and others seamlessly through its USB port. Sony - shame on you!

How on the mother earth are these piracy accelarators...... What if one decides to backup his all BRs and DVDs, store the entire collection on his HDD and sell the discs online. How is he suppose to play his backed up content. (which is legally allowed, BTW)?????

Another solution to your problem is Dune HD which is a Region Free Blu Ray player as well as a full fledged Media Player with Jukebox support, but it will also be on the higher side of the budget you are looking at. Right now too a Blu Ray player doesn't makes sense if a person is into downloading his stuff from the internet. In my example I am unable to use my Oppo BDP83 since the time I have bought Xtreamer and etrayz combination. Also there are no good titles avaliable for rent from reputed rental librarys renting Blu Rays, so unless and untill seventymm like companys doesn't release everything on BDs it doesn't make sense to invest on a dedicated BD player, unless you are super rich and could afford every movie on BDs from US/UK, but then again you need a BD player which supports playback from these regions.

I agree with sam and ashish..

Since you already have lots of stuff on your HDD..And no immediate plans to buys BDs.. Media player is the way to go..
Xtreamer/WDtv support dts/dolby audio on optical out.. z5500 should be able to handle 5.1 dts/dolby surround sound on optical input..

You will not enjoy blue ray disks completely without an HDMI receiver and a better set of 5.1 speakers..

As per our PM conversation.. I will bring my Xtreamer ..lets meet and decide..I am interested in z5500 :D

thx guys.. that clears my doubt as my major and probably only usage for player or bdp will be movies and movies in mkv container bdrips,720p,1080p.. all downloaded..

i dunno about the guy who wrote this review, But I've played high bitrate mkvs from the front usb. I can confirm that it works. avis? did not check that, but really do people still use avis? even the "download industry?"

but is it a replacement for a network media player? not yet! full DLNA support is still a month away, and there is no garantee as to how well it will work. as of today, it plays mpeg files, mp3 files from my NAS media server as well as windows 7 media server.

That is good, to know but still a media player is all advisable if MKVs and rips are the prime objective. And yes people do use AVIs, definately with DVDrips, not everybody goes for BR rips. Also can you share the media information, that you used to play on your player. You can use Mediainfo tool for that (Free) it gets itself attached to the context menu, so you just need to right click on the file and choose "Media Info" choose the tree option and give the details under Video. just like below ...

thx guys again for updating info... however again.. not networking howsoever
no internet browing.. purely and purely..mkv but high bitrate..

kapvin as u own one of these.. wud really like to know if u were able to play mkv movies of size more than 7-8 gig 720p and 1080p.
as this info wud be a mile stone for me to finalize..

as i was already going for xtreamer but just lookin if i can get a br player as well for the same..

^^ Trust me (and ofcourse others who suggest as well :D) on this, if high bitrate MKVs is your prime objective nothing can beat a dedicated decent Media Player .....

See from all of your comments i would suggest that please see the following products which are both a blue ray player cum media player DUNE BD prime 3.0, PopcornHour C-200 and kaiboer k750i, so no need to buy a blue ray player plus WDLive or xtreamer seperately
