Hello!

We currently have a Samsung 64F8500 plasma in our living room and we love it. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available now, so we are looking at LEDs.

We saw a couple of Samsung LEDs - a curved and a flat model (65JU6470), both series 6. While the 4K demos looked good, we were underwhelmed with how Airtel HD looked - we thought Tata Sky HD looks much better on our plasma.

We also looked at a couple of Sony models, which were far more expensive and so are not in contention. Non 4K picture quality was no better than Samsung, may even have been worse.

So the question is if the 65JU6470 is the best option at ~2.5L or should we be looking at something else from LG, Panasonic, etc? We would like to have 4K but are unsure about going for curved. Flat may look better with our decor.

Eager to know your thoughts!

Hi

Given that you have a suitable budget in hand, it would be advisable to go and check all possible models and brands in big electronic stores so that side by side comparison can be done.

Based on what decor you have, obviously you would be a better judge to shortlist the TV that fits your requirements and performance expectations....

4K content is not available in India and elsewhere. 4k TVs are way over-priced for market acceptance.
Get a large screen HDTV and a good Blu-ray player for now

Get any Brand which offers maximum warranty (may be paid) That should help you enjoy more. At this price point all the brands should offer similar specs/ quality.

Bigger the cost, bigger should be coverage.

OLED if that is an option. if LEDs is all you have, go with something that will offer full array local dimming option. Avoid edgelit LEDs.

Be Aware that warranty is only for 1 year for such costly tv. If company stops its production, you may not get spares even though you are under Amc, u will be asked to go for up gradation or spend extra money or else they will depreciate tv cost yearly and it is upto 55%if you are in amc or it will be only 30%. These are all hidden policies on website. Please, think of this before investing 2lakhs, if required demand Amc policies in writing. Google amc issues of various companies and cases, you will be surprised.

Do you recommend any particular brand / model? Is Vu 65 inch to be taken seriously?

KEEP SAME TV .vu HAS PANEL ISSUES. oled tvs are costly ,new tvs of 2016 will get launched in sep oct 16 ,wait till then if possible .u may get decent discount on all old models if u hold on.
I can recommend SONY ,then LG but warranty will haunt u after 1 year ,so its ur call .

Last month only, I have purchased Samsung 55" model 55JU6470 ( same series which you are looking for) and I am quite happy with it.. I have also selected paid extra warranty of three years i.e. 1+3 = 4 years in total.

I just noticed that you have a plasma. You are potentially going to downgrade your video quality by going to an LED from a plasma!!! are you sure you want to go that route? The only thing that will beat plasma in terms of PQ will be an OLED TV (it still has other issues like motion blur etc). I would rather hang onto your plasma and wait till OLED prices comes down before making the jump.

Yes after plasma LEDS look horrible. But i hear that some of the new LEDs also have decent black levels etc. is that true?

Out of the box most TVs will look crappy (including plasma). You will need to get them calibrated to see the difference.

With a back-lit, full-array, local dimming LED display, absolute black may be achieved in some parts of the screen but it will still bleed along dark to bright transitions. Also it will introduce issues when rendering shades of grey. It is just the nature of the technology, will have to live with that.

Sony currently working on Backlight Master Drive tech for LCDs. Looks promising but need to wait few years and may shell heafty money.

My vote would go for Samsung 7 series. Great TVs, with a very narrow bezel. Never fall into the trap of a curved TV. 3D is a gimmick but it comes by default so you cannot really avoid it. UHDs are great, a little too early but go for it if you can stretch your budget w'out compromising on quality.

@rainmaker @SaurabhK: agreed, I've so far preferred our plasma to every other LED I've seen in stores (except for 4K content). However, this TV is not for me, it is for my father-in-law!

@eabhishek: I don't think Samsung series 7 is available above 55 inches.

OLEDs are not available in the 2-2.5L range, so they're out.

Guess what remains is Samsung series 6 4k. But local dealer has said inventory is low for 60 and 65 inch, which would mean new models are on the way?

This purchase is proving to be problematic!
