Hi
I'm looking to buy an internet TV.
Screen size: 42 inches.

LED display.
(I saw one LG Plasma TV model too)

Price around INR 50000

Brand LG or Samsung
or other if its really much better.

Questions:
Are all LCD panels easy to hook up to a PC. Can I use my existing series 5 Samsung TV as a Smart TV?
If I buy a smart TV labelled as such, how do I connect to the internet?
Can the web data from my existing Wi Fi modem be streamed to the Smart TV?
Is additional hardware required?

I read about a device being sold in India for around 10000 that can convert a normal TV to a smart TV.
What are HDMI ports used for?

Quite a bit of confusion here!

Please help me make the transition to an Internet TV.

Thanks.

Even as I am yet to get a reply, I'm thinking of buying a 50 inch TV,
Does it matter if its a plasma or an LCD?
My budget is 60000

Connect a laptop or tablet or a media player to the TV and you have a much much better smart TV. Smart TVs are useless IMO unless you have unlimited broadband and want to watch some youtube content.

I have unlimited broadband.
How do I connect my desktop PC to my existing Samsung 5 Series LCD?
It has HDMI and USB slots.

I will not get into the brand war. I will only say this ... demo various models - LED/LCD or plasma. Check PQ. Choose what you like best. But for heaven's sake - forget about internet TV. Somebody has been feeding nonsense to you. Excuse the strong language. But the main job of TV is to display video and that is what should be sole criteria to select the TV. Everything else, I repeat, everything else including audio, is secondary. I mean, it is nice if everything else is also good, but PQ is most important.

All TVs have a VGA port to which you can connect the PC/laptop. But do check and confirm with the salesman if this feature is important to you.

If I buy a smart TV labelled as such, how do I connect to the internet?
To connect to internet, the TV has am ethernet LAN port. You can connect the ethernet RJ-45 cable from wired router to TV. Another option is wireless. But only higher end models have built-in wireless features. For lower models, you need to buy a wireless dongle. You need wireless router at the other end.

Can the web data from my existing Wi Fi modem be streamed to the Smart TV?
Is additional hardware required?
No. This is not possible. The smart TV has built-in browser, smart apps such YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and special downloadable/installable apps from the manufacturer. You have to use these.

I read about a device being sold in India for around 10000 that can convert a normal TV to a smart TV.
I have no idea. I haven't heard about it. I wouldn't bother myself. I do have a smart TV but I never use the smart features. I find laptop much better, convenient, faster, and ergonomical.

What are HDMI ports used for?
HDMI is "High Definition Multimedia Interface". HDMI ports are used to connect to HD devices to each other. Go to Wikipedia and read about HDMI.

Quite a bit of confusion here!

As I said, buy a TV only for the picture quality. Internet TV, Smart TV, etc. are also fancy and useless - at least today. Use your laptop for the internet. As hemantwaghe said, BE SMART and BUY A DUMB TV. Let the smartness be with you.

I have decided to forget about what is sold as Internet TV.

I now want to buy a 50 inch (plasma) TV for a max of 60000.
I checked out 2 models from LG and one from Panasonic.
Samsung has a 55 inch TV which was not available with that dealer.

Which one to choose?
Or should I settle for a 46 inch LED TV?

If Plasma on your plan, then look for Panasonic.
Which Samsung 55 you are talking about? It will not fit 60K budget.
I believe you are talking about 51e550 which is also a good model but on higher price.

Check the prices of Panasonic 50UT50. But I think that it will be around 75k. This is a full HD model. So is the Samsung 51E550 costing 78k. These are showroom prices. Online prices at Infibeam or Flipkart may be cheaper. Other online sites may not be trustworthy. But you will definitely get the 42" plasma at that price.

AFAIK, there is no plasma model at 55". The Samsung 55" must be an LED model and will be at least twice your budgeted amount, probably higher.

At a distance of over 10 feet (the usual viewing distance for 50"+ TVs), fhd or hd-ready will not matter for watching DTH, downloaded content, etc. Only bluray will make the difference somewhat obvious.

I have decided on a 50 inch plasma with no frills, no 3D.
I have to choose between Panasonic and LG.
The Samsung model is more expensive.
My budget is 60000.

You can look at Panasonic 50X50. The TV has limited ports (2 HDMI and 1 USB) but major features wise, it is same as XT50.

I want to buy the TH-P50X50D from Panasonic.
Its an X series 50 inch plasma TV with 600Hz Sub-field Drive
3,500,000:1 Native Contrast
WiFi Ready
Media Player
Easy IPTV

Those are features listed by Panasonic.

Is this TV worth buying for around 60000?
Do I have better options in the same budget?

I do not want a 3D TV.
I do not need an Internet TV with "Smart" capability.

Full HD is not crucial, as I bought an LCD several years ago and never used it with an HD set top box.

What is the best price currently for the TH-P50X50D?

How do you rate the TH-P50X50D plasma from Panasonic?
The largest screen possible within a budget of 60000 is my requirement.

For net browsing I will continue to use my PC and my iPad.

Are there real issues with plasma technology?

Does not having full HD matter much, as I never made use of that feature on my existing LCD?
