I searched this forum quite a bit but could not find any reference to any blu-ray drive being used in the HTPC or in the regular computer? Are people not using them, especially in the HTPCs? I wanted to buy one and was wondering which one should I buy. Is there any thing I should know before I take the plunge (other than the region-locking and stuff)? I am not interested in buying a stand-alone blu-ray player at this point.

I think Sony Blu Ray Drives are available as it is imported by Rashi Peripherals in India.....just waiting for the price to come down and will buy one.........8-))
Heard the writer is available for Rs 18000/-approx.

Blu-Ray drives for PC are yet expensive in India. The best is to get a drive from outside. I picked up one from Dubai that is working on my HTPC.

Cheers

Hi,

You can grab one for around $60 from ebay.com if you do watchful waiting and the landing cost including shipping would be around 5.5K including shipping etc.

Go for the LG models, GBC-H20L which can be crossflashed to read both HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

Kapvin and Srini sir have them. Even I am planning to grab one down the road.

Cheers!

Do people really care about HD-DVD now?

Hi,

Yes, same as blu-ray but cheaper; you can get BDs for as much as $1 a disc on wholesale lots on ebay.com or over other forums.

Cheers!

hi,

I am using LG WH10LS30 Blu-Ray rewriter bought in US for 99$ for which I paid Rs 4800/- thru my friend. In Lamington Road, Mumbai, Lite-On Blu-Ray Rom+DVD writer combo drive is available for 6.5k this month. Blu-Ray writer available is around 15k.....

I am using LG WH10LS30 Blu-Ray rewriter for almost a month now and it plays BDs on my HTPC flawlessly.

DealstoBuy.com; Newegg.com

1. It plays all BDs available in India.
2. I m yet to rip my Transformers 2 BD....
3. It plays/writes CDs and DVDs without any issues.....with PowerDVD 10, now I am getting excellent quality for my large DVD collection. PowerDVD 10 automatically upscales the DVD quality for my 42" plasma screen.
4. MOBO should be atleast 790GX and above (AMD and I don't know abt Intel); I use Asus 890GX - M4A89GTD Pro USB 3.0 with Phenom 925 X4; 2GB RAM.
4.

^Erm, with an 890GX you're only going to get core DTS / DD tracks.. they cannot decode True HD or DTS HD MA over HDMI.

The MOBO supports - BD Audio Layer Content Protection and
192khz/24bit True BD Lossless Sound; provided you connect the Blu-Ray drive.

You're regurgitating content you've misread somewhere.
What is True BD Lossless sound?

Have a look here:
AMD's 890GX integrated graphics chipset - The Tech Report - Page 1

The 890GX can't pass TrueHD, DTS-HD, or uncompressed multi-channel LPCM audio over HDMI, putting it a step behind some integrated graphics platforms.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
