Hi all,

I wanted to buy a region free blu-ray player(only pioneer) and i found the Pioneer LX-54 Blu-ray player in the gray market for 19K. The region code printed on the the side of the package is A 3. But the seller told me that it will play all regions(I don't think this is true).

My question is will i be able to play blu-ray disk from US and India? Also what about the DVD play back?

Thanks,
Sudhish.

Thanks,

The only advice I can offer you is to test it with BDs and DVDs of different regions before you buy it.

What is A 3?

The only way a Blu-Ray player can play all regions is a hardware modification has been implemented. Ask the dealer about this? Ask him what hardware mod he has done. If he blinks, you know he is lying.

Most Blu-Ray players can be made region free for DVDs using some remote control codes.

Cheers

As I live in Chennai which is well known for this Burma Bazzar I can tell one thing that these gray market sellers most of them are not even aware that an extra hardware (mod) is implemented in the player to make them region free.

They buy them in bulk from singapore where already Mod is implemented and sold to these guys. No wonder the trader has told that it will handle all the region BDs and DVDs. If we try to ask them whether Mod Kit has been implemented most of them will be unaware.

In my experience we can confidently buy them especially Pioneer, if in doubt as suggested we can check with various disks.

A - is the blu-ray region A and 3 - is the DVD region 3. Since it is a US region player it can play all the US Blu-rays and most of the blu-ray disk available here is region free. So my thinking is even if it is not modded, i can play almost all blu-rays. What you think sir?

The image shows the region on the package. Since i am planning to buy today, pls give me your inputs ASAP. This picture shows the item from a different seller. I am buying lx-54 actually.

Instead of buying lx-54, i bought Pioneer BDP-430 for 13,300 Rs. I decided to spend less since prices are falling. I tried playing the only blu ray i have which is a region free(A,B and C) which played perfectly and the Video and Audio were great.

Check the Net if a region mod is available. Even if the dealer has not installed a mod, you can do it yourself.

Cheers

sudhishkv...

So how is you BDP...doing...

And also please give me some info..as to how you select a BDP...as these days it is so confusing..to select between the models...what all features are needed to consider before buying...

I am planning to buy a BDP...i will use download movies from net and play it through USB port...all the formats will be 1920X1080 format...

So need your suggestion...

Actually thought of creating a new thread..."WHAT IS A IDEAL BDP"...
But...wanted to see the expert comments here..before going further..

I can confirm that my player is not region free. I tried a blu-ray with region B and C and it couldn't play it. Looking for the mod kit now. But i am happy with the payer, got addicted with a single movie:)

Congrats. See if you can get a mod-kit from ebay and make it region free. :)

As you can see, i am was not looking or the high-end player. I was looking for the cheap and best. Since I have the pioneer AVR, I wanted to buy only pioneer. I can use a single remote to operate both AVR and BDP(I can use any one of the remote) for normal operations. Also i like pioneer for its build quality. BDP-340 is a 3D player and I am happy with the audio and video quality. I am not really bothered about the guarantee thats why i bought from gray market. Also price is much less if you buy from gray. Only issue is the mod kit price is little high but i think it will come down soon so that i can mod it by myself. I am not really bothered about the region since most of the disks supports A. Today when i went to buy the Avatar BD, i saw three different titles. One was region free(2 Disks) for 2000 Rs, another one B, C and another one with A, C. So I bought the A,C one for 1299.
