I'm thinking of buying a new TV by the year end or most probably early next year (new year eve). I'll be buying upwards of 40" , prefereably 46". I need some advice on whether to go for the LED TV or the 3D LED TV. Is 3D tech mature enough to warrant a purchase ? I wear glasses and I'm not quite comfy on wearing one more pair on top of what I've currently. But this will be a long term investment (don't plan to upgrade for another 2-3 years) and I don't want to miss out if 3D is going to be BIG in the coming days.

So please advice guys, what should I go for normal LED or 3D LED ? Also, suggest the brand, I'm leaning towards samsung. But they have way too many series from 5-9, and I'm not really aware of the minor differences between them.

Help is highly appreciated

3D or normal TV is purely a personal choice. You must see the demo of 3D TVs to know if you really like them. IMHO 3D tv will take a long time to become a standard / essential part of living rooms. If you buy now, you are paying more for the research, marketing and other investments these companies put in 3D, rather than the production itself.

Personally I am uncomfortable with 3D films. Not just because I have to wear another set of specs over the ones I've already put on... but looking at my past experiences, I liked watching Avatar flat than in 3D. I somehow feel 3d distracts me a lot and prevents me from getting involved in the story. They are not perfect 3D either; while forground objects of the screen are projected, farther objects and background are rendered flat- makes less realistic, atleast to my eyes.

nd the technology of 3D TV without glasses is also surfacing so it would be wise to wait for another 1-2 years. Dont worry about future proof, nothing really is. As on today, for same cost you get a bigger screen if you opt for LED only. You can always sell your TV for a decent price if later on you are convinced that 3D is better. Finally, its upto you.

^^ thanks for the inputs mate. I would choose whichever gives me good quality for the next 2-3 years atleast. Even I'm a bit hesitant about 3D, hence the topic. But all these ads thats being put "in our face" about the so called 3D revolution is making me think twice before I go for normal TV.

BTW, is there a noticeable quality diff between LED and LCD TVs ?

I have looking out for the LG 32LE5500 which has full LED and has trumotion 100hz and the same is priced at 43k in delhi. The only other model is comparison to this without the LED is the sony KLV32EX500. The panasonic is crap as it does not have a model priced in the window I am looking for (35k-45k).

Gentlemen your opinion on the same would be greatly helpful.

LCD and LEDs are fundamentally the same...ie same light source is being used to reproduce images...LEDs have an array of LEDs placed to augment the light source, and these can be turned on or off depending on hte requirement...hence the degree of black levels attained on the LED is better compared to an LCD..degree of black or white determines picture quality and hence LED pictures are typically better than LCD...some LEDs come close to plasmas in terms of black levels. Within LEDs you have edge lit LEDs and full backlit LEDs.....edge lit LEDs have the LED backing only on the edges of the screen...while the full LEDs have a full array of LEDs placed all over the screen...hence edge lit LEDs are thinner and more aesthetic than full LEDs...however picture quality of full LEDs is better than edge lit LEDs.

Whether the improvement in PQ worth the extra money that LEDs command is for you to decide...suggest you take your source material (DVDs or hi def files on a flash drive) and play them on these tvs to take a call!

I agree with Santy's views on 3D...it is unlikely to hit mainstream until the requirement of glasses is obviated...heck even full HD is not main stream yet....what with full HD tvs having been around for over 3 years now...I will prefer to go for the largest possible LED that budget permits...
Cheers!

Buy a LED tv if you got the cash, don't fall for the 3d hype. Where is the 3d content? In india hd seems like a dream.....no 3d for now at least check out the samsung c6900,no idea about LG and sony though

I think this is very funny as you are asking others how you should be enjoying; your question does not seem to be for getting info to decide your choice. Anyways..

Your answered your question on 3D TV, hence you should go for LCD (LED backlit) TV.

In my views 2 to 3 years time for replacing an LCD TV is very short time. Of course, doing this you can always enjoy the state of the art technology.

As you are going to replace your TV in short time, you can get the 3D TV subsequent to this purchase.

1. The choice of 3D or no 3D actually depends on the viewing pattern. If you are a cartoon/animation addict like me, it is must have with especially some of teh newer animations films. Just to watch Scrat on Ice Age 3 alone is worth the price of a 3D TV ! Same applies for gaming. If you watch just regular movies, the current generation 3D TVs are an absolute waste of money. The newer lenticular lens based being demo'ed are probably a better option for the mass usage.

2. If your usage is regular TV/movie fare your investment is far better utilized on a larger size. A 55 in no 3D is a vastly better option than 46 in 3D this kind of material.

3. A note on cross talk. Plasmas are better at avoiding cross talk but cross talk on LCD TVs is not too bad on good material. I just got a 47LX9500 and my demo on that was pretty OK. So if you assume that 3D program material will improve, then assuming that 3D viewing will use primarily native material (this is a big IF) then the plasma advantage id not too significant.

I'd put this comment on another forum, pasting it seeing the relevance.

Let me tell you a personal experience with diff in PQ between LCD and Plasmas. I have this divx movie called Rock'nRolla. (Std dvd-rid, 700mb size, nothing exceptional). A couple of months back, I watched it on my friends then new 42" LG LH60 (CCFL backlit LCD, 200 Hz Trumotion) . The PQ was decent, but I remember that during the dark scenes , and there was quite a lot of them, the blacks were washed out really badly. They were effectively greys and not blacks. I have a LG PK550 Plasma, and the same file when viewed on my TV (using the same built-in media player) the PQ quality has a heaven' n hell difference. The colors are more warmer, and most importantly, the blacks are really blacks. So I think the logical sequence of flat panels in terms of PQ (along with technology probs) would be :

1. Full Backlit LED LCD with local dimming : (About as perfect as they come, but very exp compared to other LCDs) - super high contrast ratio
2. Plasmas (Dithering issues [dancing pixels] , line bleeding, Temp Image Retention, more power consumption) - very high contrast ratio
3. Edge Lit LED LCD.(motion judder - without motion processing, Edge Blooming, Backlight bleeding, poor black levels, documentary effect on films) - high contrast ratio [Some edge-lit TV's are worse than std LCDs]
4. CCFL backlit LCDs (motion judder - without motion processing, poor black levels, backlight bleeding, documentary effect on films) - average contrast ratio

Please feel free to disagree if you think otherwise.

and 3D TVs are basically the same TV's (LCd/Plasma/DLP) with the difference being that it's fitted with a signal processing chipset capable of supporting a true 100Hz input (50Hz std input x 2) and they might contain an IR transmitter to send signals to the shutter glasses, that come in bundled with the TV. Right the price premium is crazy, and definitely not worth it.

If you ask the folks who invested a bomb in their LCD/LED they will definitely refuse that 3D tv is better :ohyeah:

Go ahead and buy 3D tv, at present its THE gadget to flaunt with :D, and turn your neighbours green with envy.

Nobody ever bought LCD/LED so that they will be better entertained. Its was the emotional gains these type of purchases bring that guides the decisions. Go ahead and give your friends and relatives something to be envious about.

Trust me dude...In our impoverished country, where 95% of all televisions are still CRT, any FPD above 42" is enough to cause neighbor envy.

Dear Sirs,
Good evening,
A friend of mine wants to buy LED 40" / 42" & has asked me to help him out.
Please help me out by suggesting which model(s) should I suggest him, as he is looking for latest technology with at least 100HZ, should play all video formats as he would be playing movies through HDD, etc.
He prefers SONY & SAMSUNG.
He would be making his purchase either in Bangkok or Dubai.
No problem what so ever with the Budget.

Thanks and regards.........Inder
