Hi Folks,

I am currently in USA and returning back India in a week's time. I figured out that AVRs are much cheaper in USA as compared to India.

I had decided on Denon 1713 as AVR in India, however the same AVR is much cheaper in USA. Is it worth buying the AVR from USA? Can anyone compile pros vs cons of buying AVR from USA. I am returning back India in a week's time so your inputs will greatly help.

Also, i figured out Denon 1613 (available in USA not yet in India) has almost similar specs when compared to Denon 1713. Moreover, 1613 in USA is half the price of Denon 1713 in India. Is it worth buying from USA?

Thanks for your help (in advance).

Neeraj.

Definitely. I have been using receivers bought from US in india without any problems.
You will need a heavy duty (atleast a 1 kva) step down. The only downside can be on radio reception as US receivers have a skip frequency of 0.2 KHZ instead of .05 KHZ in indian ones

Please let me know what you mean "Radio Reception"?
Are you saying about 60Hz(US) & 50Hz(INDIA) frequencies?
How they affect in Audio & Video quality?

Hi Neeraj,

I am not sure about the specs of 1613 or 1713, but from price pov its definitely a plus.
I had bought Denon 2310CI from US 2 yrs back, and using it with a 1.5KVA stepdown transformer (locally purchased in bangalore) without a single issue.
AFA Radio reception (Tuner ) frequecy is concern, i do not see a problem, as my AVR can play all the common radio channels, though i dont use radio much

I am using a Denon 1912 for the past 8 months. I use a 1.5KVA step down. I did not find any problem with FM reception (not sure of AM).

Please ensure that you pack it well. Put bubble wrap or simialr material to withstand the rough handling by baggage handlers.

@Neeraj,

It is better to buy there and pack very carefully. Price is almost half of Indian price.
I bought a Yamaha AVR and working well from 2010.

One more thing is, you can buy cables from there itself if you need. They are also a bit cheaper compared to here.

Thanks ALL,

Really appreciate. I think i will purchase it from here. Voltage regulation i can manage by Step Down, but what about Frequency as US operates @ 60 Hz frequency which is not same as India.

Also, how much space a step down transformer occupies? :ohyeah:

Stepdown transformer will not occupy much, say lesser than an AC stabilizer.

I don't think 60Hz will be a problem. Im not sure, but Stepdown takes care of it.

Based on what i have read in the post, a good Step Down should not cost you more than 1.5K to 2K (INR). Happy to be corrected by anyone in the forum.

I recently brought some Audio gear from USA along with a 2KVA stepdown transformer. What I noticed is the stepdown transformer does hum when i initially turn it on and gradually the hum goes away after about half an hour.

I have the output of the transformer going into a APC surge protector and from there a 8 feet power strip for 120V power to all my audio gear including subwoofer and Projector.

India has 50 Hz, USA has 60 Hz. The step down transformer does not change the Indian frequency of 50 Hz to 60 Hz -- it only converts the voltage from 220V to 110V. 50 Hz to USA brought equipment is not a issue. It will work with 50 Hz

If you are getting a projector make sure you have backup power that will kick in for about 10 minutes -- which will protect the bulb and you can shut it down manually when power goes away
