Cd / dvd lens cleaner

Is it necessary to clean the lens of a CD / DVD player. Instructions on the Phillips CD lens cleaner indicates that the lens has to be cleaned for every 8 Hrs of use . I was also told that the brushes on the cleaner damages the LENS of the player. Is any one using the lens cleaner? Any information on this is welcome.

IMO, unless your CD skips or jumps songs, there is no need to clean the lens that often, leave alone the damage it can cause if any to the lens - same for DVDp. My advise would be to let it run its own course - I never cleaned my CDp lens in more than 1.5 years, it's still running smoothly.
