Hi,

I'm looking to replace my second system's CD player - currently a 18 year old Cambridge Audio 640D DVD player (though only used as a CD player for the last 5 years). The Cambridge sounds great - the audio is surprisingly good for a DVD player, but then it was designed to do well in audio and has a set of stereo RCA outs. Unfortunately after all these years corrosion has set in and occasionally it refuses to recognise discs.

Any recommendation for a CD player under 50k? I have a Audiolab 6000CD transport connected to my main system, but this one will require a player as the amp (Norge) doesn't have a DAC. There seem to be some Denon, Marantz and Rotel models out there but i was wondering which would be good value and reliable.

Thanks in advance!

the Marantz cd6007 is a good one. I had the rotel but the disc servo motor gave way
I don't have the cd 6007 but giving my view after using the popular 6006 UK edition extensively over a few years. While the sound is good & no issues in that dept. , the Marantz cd series in general are very finicky(mentioned in many threads in this forum itself) & have issues sometimes in reading new cd's, even old or the ones with a few scratches which can get frustrating at times. Those cd's were playing properly on my earlier Pioneer PD S802 & BDP 180 players without any issues.
Hence would recommend to look at other brands which are not finicky in reading cd's along with good sound quality. Also it is good to have a usb port too in the cd player for playback from hdd/pendrives which in my case is used more often lately.

Here are some options, for the best price you can check across several dealers as needed

I have used Marantz over more than 10 years, 2 different models, never ever had any issues.
If you are worried, try this. Almost same as the Marantz, not very expensive after discount.

Would recommend Marantz in terms of SQ . Don't know about other brands . But yes Marantz does not read all the discs , which others do . This is true even for Brand New Marantz whether its the mid range SA8005 or the Budget CD6005

Probably the issue is with different transports or lens used in later models.
My Marantz 6002 still reads and plays every disc with God's grace.

I do have a CD 5001 which also does not read all the CD's . But to be honest , I am not sure if in this case its too old and maybe the lens has gone weak and needs replacement ? This was purchased second hand .

But the others that I have are brand new - I am the first owner . CD6003 (Year 2010) , CD 6005 (Year 2016) and SA8005 (Year 2018) - All of them even when they were brand new failed to read all the CD's . I am only talking about Redbook Silver Audio CD's here , not CD-R or recorded Audio CD's or MP3's . The USB option that they give also does the same .

I experienced the same with redbook cd's with the brand new Marantz cd 6006 being finicky with some of them. Luckily the usb works fine and no issues with that so far and have been using that more often.
The weird part is, sometimes it does not read some of the cd's which it would read earlier. I have used a lens cleaning cd too just in case to clear doubts but that did not make any difference.

I would suggest to buy a CDP in the higher end instead. Save up and get a CEC cd player if you have or plan to have 1000 cds or more.

My opinion is getting any CD player which plays all CDs and use it as a transport. Get a top-notch DAC and enjoy superior sound.
Funny thing is that, most cheap no-brand ACD players play whatever ACD you put in them...

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
