Hi everyone!
first post here. had been lurking around for a while.
i need your help. i need a realy compact 2.0 system to carry in my luggage. il be working onboard a ship for 7 months so i need something better den those multimedia speakers :p
i considered active speakers but even the ones with 3 inch woofers were too big for me to carry so i cam up with this weird combo
Monitor audio CWT160 ceiling speakers
topping tp20 class t amp
you all must b wondering y ceiling speakers, but i found i could squeeze a large woofer if i used ceiling speakers instead of tiny bookshelves and hence get a decent bass output
however i havent heard them and would lik your opinions and options. budget is max 22k
thanks in advance :)

all the din and noise in the ship will be too much for the poor topping..

look at a noise canceling headphone or something like that.. .. the Bose QC15 maybe..

Hi!!

So , have found some one sailing in the same boat at last.
To be frank ,a good head phone viz grado / Audio technica etc with a good DAC is the best combo to carry . The budget seems a little tight but you may be able to scrape thro' .

Another cost effective and practical option is to buy a cheap PC 2.1 system locally and leave it on board while signing off.

You may try those ORB speakers and a mini velodyne sub if its not too much.
BTW- you are now allowed only one check in bag on the cheap seaman ticket that you travel on.

The new ILO MLC regulation seems to be doing good with you as you do find extra time to indulge .

Happy listening and do let us know with your solution.

Without a cabinet, it becomes a dipole woofer, which will have very little bass output.

You'd be better off with a good pair of headphones.

Ceiling speakers are meant to be mounted and need a baffle. Out of phase sound waves from the front and back movement of the speaker cone will cancel out each other especially off-axis and sound will be low in volume, lack low to mid frequencies and metallic/tinny sounding.

My suggestion is same as others - buy a good headphone based setup.

Sorry to reply very late... I purchased the amp and definitive technology di 5.5r in ceiling speakers... :ohyeah:
For cabinets I used empty paint drums :p well not enuf bass as a normal bookshelf but it was enough for me and sounded way better than any multimedia speakers within that size..
Since I'm home now I'll be trying to get a tight fit cabinet for them

Ceiling speakers are not that well refined in the midrange and tend to be inclined towards highs and lows and sometimes fatigue prone too.

when you are enclosing the speakers in a box, do not forget to add some kind of stuffing like polyester cotton (around 500gms) in the box to tame the mids and lows a bit. You need not over stuff but stuff enough to get the correct balance of bass and mids.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I will most certainly stuff the enclosure. The definitive technology speakers I have do sound pretty refined and have enough bass especially when carefullypositioned in a corner... Discus sions going on with the carpenter.. Will post pics once I'm done with the project :)
