I was in the market for some CFLs lately and I got to do a bit of research on the updated lighting technologies. My house had some CFLs installed years ago, and they performed quite well, except that they were of lower wattage and 6500K. I didn't want 6500K in my bedroom, so I went with incandescent ones, since at the time I was having difficulty getting the 2700K ones.

The other day I picked up two philips 2700K CFLs, 23W with an inbuilt stabilizer (Rs. 215 each). They seem to be really nice. I bought the spiral design cause they looked cooler than the tube design. Havells was also available, but they were the screw type which I couldn't use. One 23W bulb is more than equivalent to one 100W incandescent. I couldn't find 3500K ones though, which would have been a nice option.

LEDs are the newest bulb type. Couldn't find them where I looked but didn't really look hard because of the cost which is very high. But their luminous efficiency is awesome (like 7W=60W) and lifetime is supposed to be much more than even CFLs.

R u sure that the Philips CFL is 2700K. Because most of the CFL today on the market have either 6500K or 7000K to make it closer to the daylight. i believe If the K is lesser then you will not get a white colour light....

Yes, absolutely sure. I took a test in the hardware store before buying it. 2700K is like the yellow light you get from normal bulbs. 6500K looks like the light you get from tube lights. Earlier, it was hard to get 2700K CFLs in Mumbai.

If you remember sometime back during the IPL matches, there was a Philips ad for LED bulbs which changes colour according to the mood. Check the philips store in your city for LED bulbs. You should get an idea.... Plz share your experience abt LED bulbs if you visit Philips Showroom....

Is this the one ??
Philips LivingColors

It costs in the range of 10 - 15k (Correct me if am wrong).

Actually, those are probably expensive because of the colors and the other fancy stuff, LED normal light bulb replacements are around $40 for 7W and $50 for the 13W ones.

Yeah even 2500Rs for an LED bulb is 10 times the cost of CFL (200Rs) is very expensinve. As years roll by, the prices might come down...

I will advise T5 tubes, slim tubes 23W ...
CFLS are the most faulty lighting unit ever built (specially the ones we get in india).. forget about the the marketing slogans for power saving.
evey 2 year u will spend 1000Rs for 4 lights that give u 200Rs saving in bills !
i have tested GE,philips etc whatever... they all hardly lasted 2 years.

on the other hand slim tubes are running happily 3 year + ...replacement is not costly.I will wait for good LED bulbs for less ..
1 pc for DIY also in the list.

You can get philips LED bulb which has a light output comparable to a 13watt to 20watt cfl bulb for around Rs500 to Rs800.

I have an LED bulb at home. I just purchased one for trial purposes. The cost is high at Rs. 450/-. But the consumption is only 5W and looks very much like an ordinary bulb.
