Hi Folks,

Has anyone connected a laptop to a 42" plasma? What resolution do we get on it considering many of the plasmas are 1024x768.

Why do plasmas have a 4:3 resolution on a 16:9 aspect ratio TV?

That's the native resolution of the panel. Yes, it's weird. But it is (or at least it was) a limitation of the technology. They were unable to produce panels with higher resolution without significantly increasing the cost. So, we have no option but to live with it. If you must connect your PDP to your laptop, before buying, check the native resolution of PDP and whether your laptop can output at that resolution. If not, you will have aspect ratio problem or sub optimal picture quality due to re-sampling.

Btw, 1024x768 used to be the native resolution of 42inch PDPs about 2 years ago. These days they have upped the ante. Recently I have seen many PDPs on the market with panels with full HD native resolution. Can't recall if they were 42in or larger.

If you do connect your laptop to PDP, set the display mode to letterbox or 4:3 to have the aspect ratio in order.

Thanks for the response. I guess my laptop does work on 1024x768, but I imagine it will look bad on a TV screen with that resolution!

The samsung models have a better(wider) horizontal resolution for HD ready models. Only Panasonic HD ready models have this limitation I guess.

I really liked the Panasonic Plasma otherwise, but this might very well be the deal breaker :(

My LG plasma which is 42 as well has the same resolution. I guess that used to be the standard till some time ago.

1024x768 looks very acceptable to me. I don't sit close to TV like a laptop of course. The distance is about 6-7 feet and it looks okay to me.

Please do make sure that you set the resolution on the laptop to 1024x768. If not, its re-sampling and screwing the IQ.

Connecting panasonic plasma 42X30 to my laptop via hdmi, i can get a resolution of 1920x1080 on the plasma. When I first connected the TV, it switched my laptop display to 1280x720, but I could change it to 1920x1080 (my laptop has full hd display with ATI graphics). The 1080 resolution is stuck on the plasma and it displays "1080p/60Hz input" in the top left grey box/banner for 3 seconds.

Not sure how that works out, but i am guessing it gives me that resolution using 1080i because it is pathetic (very jagged) compared to smooth laptop 1080 display in much smaller screen and the text on the plasma is not clear enough - some lines of the text look deleted and some lines look stretched.

But its quite effective for watching movies played from laptop.

Thanks for the pics mate! I wonder what native resolution is all about then.

I don't mind if the TV is not able to produce 1080p output from my laptop, but if it is able to display 1366x768 without judders or pixellation, that will be good.

P42X30 is not full HD capable. It has a native resolution of 1024x768, not unlike older plasmas!

Yes, 42X30 native resolution is 1024x768. Note the recommended display resolution of 1280x720 in the selector, as identified by the system

i connected samsung 43d450 with laptop via HDMI and at 1920x1080 or 1366x768 fonts etc.everything looks bad.
At 1024x768 fonts look comparatively sharp but screen looks stretched out.So for a proper connection with laptop, TV should have proper 16:9 resolution.(1366x768 or 1920x1080)

@techie: How is it for HD content played from laptop? Equal to HD played from elsewhere?

I did some more research on this.

First thing that never went into my head was how a 16:9 aspect ratio TV have a 4:3 native resolution! Apparently, not all pixels are square, plasmas with 1024x768 resolution has rectangular pixels.

If you are using HDMI cable to connect to the TV, the HDTV is able to scale it up to a widescreen resolution and movies etc should look much better.

Plasmas with this kind of resolution is not the best buy to use as a computer screen but should do a decent job at playing 720p media.
