Hello Experts

I have a JBL 5.1 sound bar and a Yamaha RX V-585 AVR.
Can i connect the soundbar to the AVR via Optical channel?

The bigger question is if i get 5.1.2 surround speakers and still connect the soundbar to the AVR?
Is it an insane question or an option? :)

Has anyone here tried it?

Regards,
AM

Both soundbar and AVR are expecting optical input. So you can't connect them this way.
If your TV has optical out, you may try this.

Soundbar is a powered device, which should have its own amplifier.. If your AVR has L/R analogue out and if the sound bar has analogue input, then you can connect it to Soundbar using RCA to RCA or 3.5mm cable to RCA.. Otherwise, i don't think you can connect a soundbar to AVR..

But, why & what is your idea connecting in this fashion?..

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I tried using the Optical port, but could not get audio in my soundar.
The AVR has only OPT in; so does soundbar. They can never mate ;)
Your best bet is to try TV opt out or analog out to soundbar in.

If your question , is to drive the soundbar with Av receiver -- then no. Soundbar have in built amp.

But you may connect sound bar to av reciever -- in case you need to control the sources from AVR.
Check your av receiver have pre-out option , then you can connect with pre out option to your sound bar. (RCA in).
In this case both Av reciever and sound bar shoud be on.

Instead you can connect directly from Tv or other media source .

By the way some AVRs have an optical output so that can be used
BTW I meant that some AVRs have an optical o/p which can be used and AFAIK these are only available in the high end AVRs and I am quite sure that the Yamaha 585 will not be having an optical out so will not be possible in your case. The best way to get good sound is to connect the soundbar to the TV's optical o/p directly.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
