I've a very basic question - how to connect the following devices?

BDP (yet-to-decide-which-one-to-buy),
AVR (Yamaha RX-V675),
TV (Sony W950A) and
STB (Tatasky)]

Following minimal connections I guess are anyway needed -

a. STB -> TV through HDMI
b. AVR -> TV through HDMI
c. BDP -> AVR through HDMI

Now, I've following questions -

1. Occasionally while watching movies in tv channels, I wish to get the audio out through AVR and speakers. Now, is connection (b) above sufficient for this?
Or do I need to connect STB and AVR through optical cable?

2. Now, say, I'm playing movie from some device (hard disk, tablet etc.) connected to TV through USB. If I want to get audio through AVR, will connection (b) suffice?

Sorry for such silly questions but I could not determine how to search effectively if the same questions are already answered in other threads or not. If so, please redirect me to those threads.

Another question - I find it difficult to to connect/disconnect the speakers with/from AVR every time I need to. It looks to me banana connectors or something like those could be helpful. Do those cause any noise etc.? If no, which type of connectors are better?

simple connect stb, bluray or any other player to avr via hdmi ...From avr hdmi out to tv

it is not advisable to frequently connect and disconnect ur speaker connection from avr

STB (HDMI out) -> AVR (HDMI in), BDP (HDMI out) -> AVR (HDMI in) and
AVR (HDMI out) -> TV (HDMI in) will handle AV.

TV (Audio out) -> AVR (Audio in) will handle A when devices are connected to TV for playback through USB.

Thanks nshankar and karthi1000.

With this connectivity (STB HDMI out -> AVR HDMI in -> AVR HDMI out -> TV HDMI in), do I not need to keep the AVR on even for normal tv viewing (like say, I'm listening to news channel)?

My requirement is to bypass AVR for normal TV viewing so that TV viewing process remains simpler for my parents.

There is another option. Have an optical/coax from stb to avr (typically STB wont have two HDMI out) so you can avoid going through AVR every time. the only change you will need to do is to mute the TV. This will work as long as the audio on STB is non HD. So as long as you are not in a 4k STB which supposedly gives HD audio (although I am not sure), you should be fine.

BTW, this is the way I use my connections.

Thanks - this is good to learn :)

Hi,

I have been experimenting all the different connections with my new AVR.
Initially I have connected everything to AVR HDMI IN. Then AVR HDMI OUT to TV HDMI(ARC) and it works fine. Only problem is I need to keep AVR in standby mode when watching TV.

Now connected this way:

BDP, DVD etc connected to AVR(HDMI INs )
AVR(HDMI OUT ) connected to TV (HDMI marked as ARC )
D2H STB ( HDMI ) connected to TV ( HDMI1 marked for STB)
D2H STB Coaxial out connected to AVR coaxial.

This way STB viewing is independent of AVR. For normal TV viewing AVR is OFF. When I need STB audio through AVR I switch ON the AVR and select AV2 to get coaxial audio.

Regarding USB playback and ARC, I am not sure whether it works or not. But you can always connect TV optical out to AVR optical in for direct audio connection. ARC mostly depends on how manufatures implement it. I tried getting D2H STB audio via ARC. It is only PCM and not DD5.1.
Any other peripherals playback like USB etc it may or may not work by ARC and it depends on your TV model too.
For ARC to work we need to keep HDMI control on in devices which I found very annoying. When I turn off one it controls others. So I have turned off HDMI Control in all and I found it convenient.

My connections are like this;

1. STB HDMI TO TV HDMI (1)
2. AVR HDMI OUT WITH ARC TO TV HDMI (2)WITH ARC
3. Pioneer BDP 450 ONE HDMI TO TV HDMI (3) AND OTHER ONE TO AVR input HDMI

With the above , selecting the TV HDMI (1) I can view the DTH without AVR process, switch on the AVR ANd select the input as TV in AVR, SOUND FROM TV relays thru AVR, as the ARC facility is in both AVR and TV. Select the HDMI 3 for direct BDP play and Select the INPUT in AVR as BLuray for bluray video/ audio thru AVR
