Cost of large TV's obnoxiously high in India

Yeah so true, we pay import duty on parts and other hidden taxes on everything including electronics that doubles their price to actuals, all for the politicians to do scams and enjoy life, while people die of hunger without social security, killer roads have potholes and the list goes on.. I am waiting for the day when even taking a dump or a leak will be taxed...

The day is not far. Government is asking states to levy user charges for lifting garbage from doorstep. Hope they donot tax the polluted air we breath

That price difference is pretty high for Sony/Samsung mainly. You get much better pricing on these in the grey market. Check ebay.in for ballpark pricing.

The reason you get cheap prices on eBay.in is because this importers have made their bases in SEZ (special economic zone) which allows them to import electronics without paying much import duty. I think TV has 100% import duty and taxes. Those TV sets will never see any price drop.

yeah but he wont get guarantee,my blood boils over evrytime i see stuff so cheap outside ...in india pay lacs of income tax and then with the remaining money eat in an ac restaurant and pay tax because there is an ac there while some class1 chimps get free or subsidized food for creating a ruckus in a circus called parliament..the dance of democracy.India is like a one way traffic just give no take.. these lawmakin uneducated chimps and idiots ruin everything while they enjoy privileges till they die

I agree with you but you people in Paris do pay for a leak right? I would'nt mind paying provided that money is used to keep the loos clean...

Yeah Sir  ppl in paris pay a euro at someplaces like the toure de eiffel restaurants, to take a leak, but there are free toilets(with queues) all over the place..plus the quality of life and facilities is something we will never get despite paying similar taxes ...politicians arent thugs all the time here and well the cleanliness is brilliant.Just look above and the sky is crystal blue like a canvas,i wish the air in bangalore was so clean..I just wish we put our resources to the best use and become the best country in the world to outshine any Paris or NewYork...but will that happen..achhe din to aaye nahee tax badha diya bass..Anyways sorry for the offtopic whining...

I have noticed that in US, with the advent of craigslist, prices on used stuff has kept the prices of new stuff in check. In the old days prices of used motorcycles would escalate every year when the new model came out. Now it does not happen, the price of used keeps the new in check, and manufacturers now have the flood right in front of them.

If there is a good healthy used market in the country, the prices of new things will get choked off.
So is the manufacturers holding a monopoly. In the US you can get TV's in a 100 brand names. Sony, Samsung, LG, sharp, and then there is the scepter, vizio, or my 2 46" Hi-sense (yea yea Nonsense was all sold out so I had to buy Hi-sense).

There is a million brands, shipped direct from china in a lot of cases and they have to compete with local Craigslist where someone who bought it last year needs to move or upgrade ...

You should look into creating a good used market like craigslist and you'll puncture the bubble.

Cool.

So as I thought, no conclusive breakdown/reason. Aka corruption and incompetency.

I don't know, I'd not put it so simply. If you post a for sale on Craigslist, you get a lot of junk emails etc. Anyway you also get genuine calls and sell stuff pretty easy and quick if it is a good item in demand and $$$ is right. In fact even ebay is good. Usually you get bids from people in a 100 mile radius of you if the item is big like a TV.
India needs one or more of those.
Cool.

I think manufacturers forget about sensible pricing... They take the US price as benchmark, equate it to INR + Duty + Heavy/greedy - Distributor/Dealer Margin and then finally consumer :ohyeah:

Let me give you an example...

I had been along with my friend to a Viveks (Larger electronics retail store in Tamil Nadu) to check the not so popular Micromax 50 inch LED TV.. The showroom staff quoted a price of Rs 49,990/- and they refused to make any discounts.

The same model was listed in Flipkart for Rs 33,000/- A staggering 17K price difference... I think it is retail chain who eat away our money than the manufacturer...

On a serious note, I would like to see Micromax catch-up the TV market and shake the segment soon...

Oh in the US those guys will be out of business in a week. People will be walking around with Craigslist and ebay and amazon and all other ads both on paper and on their phone. People would buy off one of those sites while standing in the store. And wave it in the salesman's face.
I guess They get a lot of non internet foot traffic. Or the online sale and shipping etc etc can be scams. I think amazon and a few others have cleaned up the whole scam situation well in the US.

Cool.
