I know Denon S series is under-powered but then since it retails more than the popular 1700H, why is it even there in first place? Is there a reason why this can be picked over the 1700H?

I did evaluate S960H when I was looking for an AVR sometime back. What I understood that X series are built with higher end components than the S series. Moreover, S960H doesn't support bi-amp speakers, it has a relatively smaller power supply etc.

I ended up buying X2700H.

  • To start with, The S960H is from 2020!
  • The 960H is rated at a higher power output than the 1700H.
  • Dual HDMI outputs versus one on the 1700H.
  • 1 8k input versus 3 on the 1700H.
  • No component video IN or OUT on the 1700H. I doubt if anyone cares or gives a krapp about these.
  • 5 analog inputs on the 960. 3 on the 1700.
  • No Zone 2 Pre Out on the 920H.
  • No external IR Remote socket on 960.
  • Multi EQ on 960 versus Multi EQ XT on 1700
  • If you care about weight, the 960 weighs more!
The higher power consumption for the 960H is in line with the claimed power output.
Unless you care about 8K and the Multi EQ XT part, I am not so sure how the 1700H is a better specified than a 960H.
