I have a Philips DVP5965K and PS3 (bought from Singapore). The PS3 is great for playing blu-rays but many DVDs are region locked for which I have to resort to my DVP5965K (1080i upscaling) which is region free.

Is there a huge difference between 1080i and 1080p? Should I buy some player to change my setup?

DVDs are default encoded to 480P. Trying to get them anywhere closer to 1080P is pretty much impossible. This does not mean that the players wont upscale them, they certainly do, but you dont have to have a 1080P specific player to do it. Oppo 981 (used market) or similar players do upscale them reasonably well.

I can provide you a technical understanding of the same.

You must be knowing that "moving picture" on your display are actually still images that are refreshed at a very high rate, giving you the illusion of contineus moving image.

The difference between "i" and "p" refers as to how your display refreses that image. When we say 1920x1080 resolution what we mean is, 1,080 lines of vertical resolution, and 1920 lines of horizontal resolution, making a frame resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.
As I said the image is displayed on these pixels as a still image refreshed very fast.
The term "i" stands for interlace, When the display refreshes the picture with an interlaced display, it refreshes every alternate line of resolution, or half the picture, and then refreshes the other half. This technically doesn't give a smooth transition as "p" or progressive display.

On the other hand "p" stands for progressive in which the entire image is refreshed in one go or all at once.

The refresh rate is displayed if fps (frames per second) for pal its 25 and NTSC is 30, so if we say 1080p30 we mean 1920x1080 progressive resolution with 30fps as the frame rate.

The older CRTs had the interlace technique, all latest displays uses progressive, that is said to be smooth and less flickery. Although its always debatable how much difference the eye would pick up.

If I do go for a DVD player, I want a region free upscaling player to 1080p. Is Oppo 981 the best for it? Give me other options and tell me which one I should go for please. What will the price be?

My suggestion would be oppo 980H or Toshiba SD-580 (if you can arrange one) with Toshiba having an upper edge because of its price..........................Performance wise reviews are too good.

Other choises
Toshiba XD-E500 or 600
SONY D995 (its a dvd recorder).....

Toshiba SD 580 looks perfect because of the price. It is region free? Where can I get it from? What abt SD7300? Also check the thread on DVD Recorders please to suggest one to serve my purpos

How much will Oppo 980H cost and where can I buy it from?

That is problem, there is no official distributer for Oppo in India, you have to take the 20North route or if someone can get you from US.......

OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH Audio < Disk Players & Recorders < TV & Home Theatre < Electronics : Electronics - Shop in the US from India @ 20North

However the player is out of stock currently, you can mail 20north and check the availibility or find the player or any sire and let 20North ship it for you (they have that provision)

wont that be 480i ?

True DVD native resolution is 480i (576 for PAL), but most of the todays gen DVD players can do "Progressive scanning" and when that player send the signals to a screen with a progressive display we actually get 480p and not 480i (576 for PAL).......

That is why it is said to play DVD using progressive scaning on todays LCDs through component to get better image quality......:)
