digital volume control vs analog volume

Dear all,
would you please explain the difference b/w digital and analog vol control. For me it was easier to control the analog volume control,as I was able to predict the volume say at 3 o clock,9 o clock etc. but with digital , the minimum volume is - 79 and maximum is 0 db.. the playing can be heard only when the volume beomes around - 50 db..with certain recordings I have to move up to -25 db..why is this so?
 
Drgopu: The phenomenon you speak about is more about the implementation of the digital volume in your set up rather than anything to do with the difference between digital and analogue volume control.
There are many ways to implement digital volume control. i am a big fan of Daniel Weiss who makes the Weiss professional digital products and also domestic products like the Medea DAC. Here is an article where he explains some of his thoughts:
