I am thinking of making some DIY speaker stands. The design is largely based on the TNT design of sandwiching a PVC between two boards..... with one modification. Instead of using the long threaded rod inside the PVC, I was thinking maybe I'll use a length of wood. Can anybody comment on whether this will affect the sound in a negative way.....

The reason for replacing the threaded rod with wood.... I'm not too much of a carpenter and the idea of drilling those holes is not very appealing. It would be easier to simply hammer the damn things in with brute force :D. Also I have no idea what kind of shop to get the threaded rod from.
Any help appreciated.

What PVC? Are you going to use the soles of your shoes to rest your expensive audio gear? :)

I had made the TNT stand and used it for a year. Drilling holes or cutting complex curves is easier than you think. Many woodworking shops on the road side will do it for you for 7 to 10 bucks a cut. (you can also take your girlfriends skirt along to make it more exciting :D)

Don't use the "3 legged cheetah" design on TNT, it is a flawed design that people blindly copy (like me ) and regret later. It sways like a structure designed to withstand earthquakes of intensity 15 on the Richter scale. :ohyeah: Unless you use wood and glue+nail it firmly i.e.

To give a more fitting analogy, The rod+hole will have mm variations that make it sway like a rickshaw negotiating a traffic jam, if you just point (ok touch) a finger to it

Cheers
