I am interested in obtaining some used bookshelf speakers from UK/germany on ebay site but they do not handle customs duty clearance like amazon UK.

My question would be whether i am legally permitted to import used speakers to india and if yes, how do i propose to handle customs duty clearance.

Hi,

The courier company, e.g., DHL, UPS, etc., will handle the customs clearance. You may need to provide some KYC info. and they will coordinate with you for the payment.

Some couriers, like DHL, can be contracted to pick up the package from the seller and deliver to you after completion of customs duty formalities. A few smaller courier companies also provide this service, but I dunno how reliable.

Alternatively, you can appoint a customs broker to take over the consignment upon its arrival and handle the formalities for you.

The above is valid if the consignment value is below Rs. 1 lac. If the value exceeds Rs. 1 lac CIF, then you are not permitted to import unless you have a valid IEC code. In thsi case, you may consider requesting a dealer friend who has an IEC code to import it for you for a fee.

Hope this helps

Easiest way is to use a freight-forwarding service like Borderlinx or Aramex shop n ship, people regularly import used audio gear through them, I have used Borderlinx couple of times. They are I think a DHL subsidiary and the shipping and customs is handled by DHL, so reliable mostly.
You can either prepay the duties according to their calculation to handle customs or choose to pay at the time of delivery. Quite easy to use and hassle free most of the time.

Customs duty i assume is flat 30% regardless of the type of electronics?
What sort of text do i need to input in the import form?

You can try searching stuff on Ebay Global easy buy. Just google it and Ebay Global Easy buy will handle all custom clearance n all. The price mentioned over there will cover all the customs fees and shipping.

All used goods require licence to import except used capital goods. If the speakers are shown as capital goods then its okay. Otherwise you have to pay, in addition to duty, fine and penalty.

You will not have to 'input' anything, that is what these services are for. They handle the paperwork for you and once you have made the payment it is their headache. If any additional information is needed they will ask for it. For me when I imported the DAC customs inquired what the product was, all I did was write couple of lines on what it does and how it will be used.
You will have to provide KYC information of course, I had to upload them on DHL website but all this is quite straight forward.
