This is a detailed discussion on the phenomenon of ERS
Issue is not stereo or mono. The problem arises because the recording was electronically processed for 33 rpm vinyl record. Which most of time does not sound good. Probably you know this, so do you mean to say in mono they sound different ?All vintage integrated amps have a stereo mono switch, select mono and the issue is mostly taken care of.
Regards,
This was unfortunate to have a few great soundtracks in ERS, killed the listening pleasure. Only solace - mono EPs and SPs (7inch) of the same sound track, a little truncated version however in full mono. For full version (mono) availability is in the film.
Good to know. I have a thought, please correct me if I'm wrong. Groove cut (template) for LPs post 1970 including ERS LPs should be stereo. Are we loosing signal by using a mono cart on stereo grooves, irrespective of the fact the source sound being stereo or mono or ERS, as it is picking the relevant signals only owing to movement.I have just acquired Audio Technica AT MONO LP moving coil cartridge just for this purpose.
Been planning to give it a go on ERS LPs and report back about the results and findings.
On old mono LPs, this cart has produced phenomenal results as it tracks vertical and horizontal but picks only vertical cut music. So less surface noise, less distortion and very little clicks and pops.
As it has compliance for both vertical and horizontal movement it does not ruin a stereo record like older mono cartridges used to do.
The AT Mono cart played ERS LP of Yaadon Ki Barat flawlessly.Good to know. I have a thought, please correct me if I'm wrong. Best way to use mono switch in amp. You and I are old Sansui fanatics
Not if it is cartridge with four terminal and internally connected to sum both signals. Externally also if one has summed the two channels in some way or have used stereo to mono rca adapter. Are we loosing signal by using a mono cart on stereo grooves,

If playing electronically processed stereo with mono cartridge sound good; it is ok. But fact remains that orignal recording were electronically separated so tone/phase may not remain same. Best way to play EPs in mono. Even playing with one speaker is ok as it will lower the phase issues errors in the room one is listening.
All said, if the music is well recorded/pressed or not will have biggest influence. There must be some rare example that even electronically processed stereo record may sound good on regular system.
